[Bill Davis] “and oddly, he’s still cutting on FCP X.
In fact his entire presentation was basically re-imagining the Voiceover tool as a simple multi-track recorder for music tracking and sweetening”

    I think you mean this:

It should be noted that Michael is talking about personal use as a DIYer. Certainly Light Iron relies on a lot of very ‘heavy’ (non-Apple) iron in its professional work. Although LI’s colorists have graded films edited with FCPX.

I would counter though, that once you get deeper into bussing and effects processing, FCPX is quite possibly the worst audio option. Certainly Logic Pro X is a far, superior choice. FCPX is great for the simple stuff, but you quickly outrun your skis.

[Shane Ross] “I thought that the iMac and iMac Pro were both WELL SUITED for FCP-X…and that an eGPU would help with FCP-X users that want to finish in Resolve..

The iMac and iMac Pro actually work well with Premiere, MC, and Resolve – not just FCPX. The eGPU doesn’t necessarily help much with a higher-powered machine, unless you have a lesser internal GPU than what’s in the eGPU.

That’s changed a bit since Mojave was introduced, because Apple straightened out how you tap into the eGPU at the OS level. That’s something Adobe has taken advantage of between the time the eGPU and the eGPU Pro were released. Premiere Pro works MUCH better with eGPUs now than when they were first introduced. Typically, though, it’s an either-or situation and not a combination of both GPUs. So what tends to happen when you pick eGPU as the preference, is it does the heavy lifting and the internal GPU loafs.

But remember, using an eGPU isn’t simply about performance. It also has to do with taking the load off of the internal GPU when you want to run a number of high-res displays or use stereo 3D devices. An eGPU is a great add-on if you work with a Mac mini or a 13″ MBP. It’s less of an advantage with full-loaded iMac or iMac Pro.

I’ve never used the Vegas suite, but DVD Architect is still part of the package now that Magix owns them.

Well, Adobe hasn’t been supporting any legacy software for some time. They have only left it available up until recently. Encore being the last of the batch, because enough people screamed. The general consensus – right or wrong – by software manufacturers, is that physical consumer media (CD, DVD, Blu-Ray) is dead and, therefore, they have quit catering to those needs. I realize there’s still a need in many circles, but obviously everyone’s direction is towards cloud and streaming.

In my case, I have still been able to author basic (play once or with simple chapters) DVDs and Blu-rays using FCPX. Works fine.

And just to play devil’s advocate, any software you purchased on e-bay most likely does not have a valid license (even if you have a valid activation code), because you didn’t purchase it from Adobe or an authorized reseller. I don’t know that for a fact, but if you were to be in a lawsuit (highly, highly unlikely), I doubt you could win. I’m not sure that’s ever been tested, though. But, I’m not a lawyer and don’t play one on TV ☺

Every hardware and software manufacturer licenses technology from other companies and developers. The legal terms of these agreements vary and aren’t indefinite. This particular situation has a lot of speculation swirling around it, since there may or may not be an ongoing lawsuit.

In any case, Adobe isn’t the only company affected and may not be the last. And that could relate to any part of any given application. Remember you never own any software that you purchase. You only bought the right to use it under the limitations of the terms and conditions agreement ☺

There are several related threads in the FCPX Debates and Premiere Pro forums that cover this.

May 16, 2019 at 1:53 pm in reply to: AME LUT gotcha

[John Pale] “The “Common” folder method is the sanctioned Adobe way to do it”

Thanks. The only problem with either approach is that Adobe links these LUTs by their relative stack positions, which have been sorted by their alphabetical file names. If you add any LUT into either app package or the common folder, it will shift the alphabetical order. This means any sequence where you previously used a LUT in the basic or creative Lumetri tab, that LUT may now be in a different relative position within the LUT stack order and your sequence may now be referencing the wrong LUT.

OK. I ran a test. Yes, if you create these folders in the Common folder and place the LUTs in there, it works across the apps. For some reasons though, I had to create these folders. They didn’t already exist. Thanks.
