  • How much system RAM? This impacts working with stills. What sort of GPU?

If you aren’t comfortable with Resolve or roundtripping, there’s an alternative. Color Finale Transcoder is out and this lets you import/transcode BRAW files into FCP.

Are you talking about composing original music from scratch or building a soundtrack from existing loops and elements? If the former, then there is no current rate. It’s whatever the composer can negotiate. 60 minutes is a lot and on par with an indie film score. In that scenario, with the composer retaining the rights, the cost can range from $2K – $50K. Meanwhile needledrop for non-broadcast might be as low as $50 per track (2-4 min).

Several possible ways to tackle this.

The first is to have the translator create a time-stamped Word doc and then manually copy and paste from the doc into FCP’s built in captions. So you would be creating original captions – either open or closed.

The second would be to upload the African track to Simon Says and just let it transcribe the file into jibberish. Have the translator log into Simon Says and use the online editing tool to fix all of the captions.

A third option might be to have the translator speak along to the track translating on-the-fly. Have the African language in one channel and his English recorded in the other. Edit both against your video, so that you’d use the African for sync and the English would automatically be in the correct place. (Both of these are only for reference.) Upload the English channel to Simon Says. Fix as needed and download the captions and/or subtitles.

Thanks for the details. I would say it’s the codec that your camera generates. I doubt that you will ever get good playback with this codec working natively in Premiere.

If you are finishing out of Premiere, then I would suggest first transcoding the camera media to ProRes (using Media Encoder). Work with that as your “original,” instead of the MP4 files from the camera. Do a small project this way and see if working with transcoded ProRes files improves your performance.

I still don’t understand the 1080×1350 size. That makes no sense. Are you sure that’s correct? Typically if you are editing video for broadcast, YouTube, etc. it would be 1920×1080 (HD) or 3840×2160 (UHD 4K) or maybe 4096×2160 (DCI 4K).

How much empty space is on your SSD? 500GB is relatively small.

What camera is that media from? That’s a weird frame size. Any idea what the nature of the codec is? MP4 is merely a file wrapper. I presume it’s H.264, but it could be something like H.264 10-bit 4:2:2 (used by Panasonic EVA1 cams), which will choke Premiere.

What are “Handy Seamless Transitions”? I presume some type of third party plug-in.

Is the media playing from your internal SSD? So, cache files, media, and project are all on your internal drive, right? How fast is the internal SSD? And it is an SSD, not a Fusion drive, correct?

We need more details. What type of media (format, frame size, frame rate, codec, etc)? What are your sequence settings? What type of effects are you applying? What other gear is connected to your computer? What types of drives are being used for the media?

Yes. I discussed that in the review. You adjust the raw settings, them import. Yes, to the relink questions, also mentioned in the review.

There’s also another issue with AME. Apparently third-party audio plug-ins used in a Premiere Pro sequence aren’t linked if you send the sequence to AME to render.

I’ve been on it personally, as well as the whole shop, since it was released. No huge issues.

One weird issue though. On one machine there’s a conflict with Dropbox, which required uninstalling Dropbox on that Mac. The same Mac also has some intermittent issue with Project Locking, so I have to run that Mac with locking disabled. Neither are showstoppers. Adobe is aware of both issues, but to date there’s no fix.

Overall, I like the updates, including the change to captioning in Premiere Pro. That’s a HUGE improvement. If you do a lot with closed captions, then you really should upgrade.
