Sounds like the Dell should be OK. By display, I mean that the Dell/Apple would be used as your computer monitor. By video, I mean that many people are using various LCDs to display HD video from the output of a Kona2 or Decklink card. By using an HD-SDI to DVI (or VGA) convertor, these screens can be used for video display instead of a CRT-based broadcast monitor.

You might want to look over those numbers again. I think what you’ve saved in not going the traditional route will end up costing you in render times. Plus the intermmediate codec is poor, so by the time you CC and filmlook this, it will look far worse than native HDV or DVCProHD.

Depends on whether you are using this as a computer display or for video. A number of comments I’ve seen lately about the Dell as an HD monitor were negative. Poor color consistency at off-angle viewing. Also remember that the Apple has pass-through USB and Firewire, which the Dell doesn’t. You might also look at the HP models.

Charlie,

One more thing on trims and clip collisions. If you select an edit point with the Rolling Edit tool and hold down Option, it will select picture and sound tracks. Then a head trim affects both, but you don’t have a clip collision. Also if you use the Selection tool and trim only the video track (positive head trim with linking turned off) the trim works without a clip collision, but leaves a gap in the video tracks.

I also wouldn’t expect to see “Mactel” machines comparable to current G5s until 2007. Look for Intel PowerBooks first.

Have you looked at Maxtrox Axio running under Premiere Pro? This might be a better upgrade path for you coming from Digisuite. There has also been a trade-up discount for Digisuite owners.

Regarding the EDL. Were you working in a 60p timeline? Have you tried changing the TL setting to 60@30? If so, does this help?

I got Filmscribe as part of the Xpress Pro bundle. It works fine without Avid editing software installed. If you download an Xpress Pro dundle, it should be in the goodies folder, I believe.

Having done my share of CC on Symphony, I find those tools hard to beat. I do a lot on FCP and can work with it. I like the selective color correction. Now, if I had Symphony’s CC + Autodesk’s Color Warper for secondaries it would be the best NLE CC available.

I’m hoping Synthetic Aperture starts shipping the newest versions of Color Finesse shown at NAB. This will be the best CC solution for FCP other than FinalTouch, which is it’s own animal, of course, and not really tied to FCP.

Sorry you’re having a tough time with this. The cursor as used in Velocity is very contextual. Many right-button menus functions that change depending on where you are in the UI. In the case of the Match Frame, it’s simply a pointer to the track that the Match Frame function is targeting. The matched clip is loaded as a source and the cursor has nothing to do with the target tracks for the edits. Those are assigned in standard track mapping used in that UI as in most others.
