I’ve been an online/offline editor for over 15 years and I have been using FCP for a year and a half now and I like it but some things really surprise me. Over the last year I’ve been doing 3d HD projects with 2 channels of video and have used FCP successfully to do it. Today I had my 2d cut which is the starting point using DVC ProHD as an offline format and then I needed to re-import both eyes of uncompressed 720P 60 8 bit. Being a long time on-line editor I still like EDLs as I can edit them with a text editor. I exported the EDL and EVERY SOURCE TIMECODE WAS TOTALLY WRONG. I couldn’t believe it not even close. This was a 720P 60 timeline and I finally – after much wasted time – tried dragging all of my clips into a 30P timeline and then it would export OK but about 10% of the edits had incorrect time code. I then made 2 versions of the edl, one with the reel numbers with L and one with R for left and right. I then recaptured the footage with the same settings and one set of clips came in with one second more of handles then the other. Strange. I then did some correction of the clips in After Effects and all of the clips had a significant gamma shift after coming out of AE. I’ve actually made this sound a lot better than it was. I spent hours just trying to find a way to make it work and this is my fourth 3d project! But every time I have problems with incredibly basic things. Although this is 3d it is still a very basic handling of clips and FCP has serious trouble with it. This is the first time I have seen the gamma shift from AE. I have used it for this many times and have never seen this before.

Another problem I have run into lately is when I capture in clips to DVC Pro HD. The clips come in black and the little clip icons have jagged edges. If I click on remove sub clip limitations the clip will then work but in the canvas if the playhead goes past the 50% poing from left to right the clip runs out and goes black.

Have you updated to FCP 5.0.2? With 5.0, if you captured via HD-SDI, the captured clips would appear as subclip icons in the bin, which you needed to trash and then import the actual media which is captured correctly to your drives.

BUT that was only with SDI captured material, if you’re capturing via Firewire, it would be fine. FCP 5.0.2 fixed the HD-SDI capture issue.

There are two sides of this problem. First, FCP is YUV and AE is RGB. Second, 709 HD color space support in QuickTime 7 is totally messed up:

Create an orange to blue left to right gradient in FCP 5.
Drop onto the High-Def Uncompressed 8-bit YUV timeline.
Create white to black top to bottom gradient.
Superimpose over the first gradient. Set Composite Mode to Add.
Export QuickTime Movie with current settings, import the movie back into FCP and compare.

In Standard Def. the exported clip has no shifts but in Hi Def it is clamped.

    Robert,

Regarding the EDL. Were you working in a 60p timeline? Have you tried changing the TL setting to 60@30? If so, does this help?

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

Yes this is 5.02 and yes this is via HD-SDI. And yes if you import the clips back in all is well.

Yes this was a 60P timeline. I tried the 60@30 setting but it made no difference. I could tell in the EDL that the record times were bases on 60 fps as the frames went above 30 but all of the record numbers were correct. The source numbers were hours off. I didn’t look at it enough to tell if there was some pattern or not.
