[Andrew Kimery] “The iMac Pro is an odd duck for Apple…”

There are already cracks, such as lack of support for the iMP and the XDR displays without an eGPU.

[Bill Davis] “Yeah, it’s every bit as stupid as 20-someting year old me telling the Broadcast Pros of my day…”

I don’t think that’s a valid comparison. The people doing work on a 4-channel ADO back then were likely doing work that was quite a bit different on their systems and at a higher quality level than you were with your Mac and DV. I definitely DON’T mean quality in terms of the production value, but rather actual quality of the formats used, compression, etc. In their environment, real-time process was very important. You were able to balance real-time against cost with a tolerance for rendering.

Neil’s issue is that a YouTube influencer has different demands and expectations for their business than he does in his. Maybe yes, maybe no. YouTubers like Jonathan Morrison work at a pretty high level in terms of technology and quite a bit higher than the standard fair on YouTube or Instagram. But are the demands the same as Neil’s in the abstract? I don’t know.

Actually this looks pretty normal for scrolling credits in a progressive playback. Reading through the Adobe thread, it seems to me that you have really overcomplicated things. Simply bring your PSD file into Premiere as a flattened PNG. Add/adjust start and end keyframes and you are done. This will let you adjust the length of the clip, which will change the speed and, thus, the strobing. Personally I would recommend static end credits and not a scroll. You will be happier.

Which version of Premiere Pro? Why aren’t you using Lumetri?

It’s not speed. 7200RPM spinning disks are fine for 1080 media. I agree with Herb. See if you can add an internal drive for media. Test that and if it performs better, then consider adding 2 to 4 internal drives, RAID 0 (2 drives) or RAID 5 (4 drives). Just for media. 7200 RPM “pro” drives 4TB each or larger.

2013 Mac Pros have rendering issues with Adobe products because of the GPUs. You’ll get better performance with the iMac Pros. PC versus Mac is really a subjective argument these days. I would say if you go heavy AE or 3D, then the edge will be with PCs and Nvidia cards. Otherwise, it’s a toss up.

As far as cost, if you buy a workstation tower (Mac or PC), then assume a viable life of 10 years (maybe more). From that view, cost becomes less of a factor. But clearly you have to have a business justification for spending that much.

[Terry Barnum] “I’m curious about the problems you’ve experienced with Libraries on the QNAP.”

Extremely sluggish performance and lots of spinning beachballs. We are 10GbE through a switch with 9 connected workstations. Media is fine, it’s the Libraries and how FCPX works with these files. Conversely, we have no issues with Premiere Pro project files on QNAP.

We also have a Jellyfish, which has become our main storage. It’s better optimized for FCPX and I can run with Libraries on Jellyfish. However, all things considered, FCPX works best when the Libraries are local on very fast drives, because the app is constantly writing updates to the Library file.

[Terry Barnum] “I recalled reading something (which I can’t find now) about not setting the Motion templates location to the Library if it’s external”

Setting to external is fine as long as you are the only one editing. If the library gets moved around, then having them external runs the risk of not having the templates come along. Internal avoids that. However, personally, I haven’t had good luck with FCPX Libraries on QNAP. Media is fine, but I keep all the other things local.

  • [Bill Davis] “But the Adobe suite being CUDA centric and maybe not looking as directly for Metal code, might not benefit as much. “

Actually that hasn’t been the case for a year or more. True on the PC side, but not on the Mac side.

[Bill Davis] “theoretically each of which might eventually be able to be flashed to support a particular editors or shops regularly encountered codecs?
This “Afterburner” Programmable ASICS deal might be just the beginning of some very interesting things. “

In theory yes, but in practical application, highly unlikely. This card and what you can do with it will probably be very tightly controlled by Apple. As such, it will probably only accelerate codecs that are in Apple’s interest or by companies that Apple has an understanding with. Maybe RED for instance. Or not. Don’t hold your breath.
