February 4, 2007 at 6:39 pm in reply to: Advanced AVID techniques?

Don’t know of any schools/trainers who can provide this, but I do know that the book “Avid Xpress Pro and DV on the Spot” by Steve Hullfish, Chris Phrommayon, and Bob Donlon is a must-have (and cheap!) resource in this area.

    Check it out: https://books.elsevier.com/us/focalbooks/us/subindex.asp?isbn=9781578202546&country=United+States&community=focalbooks&ref=&mscssid=VXU5PUV4GR6V8LLAKHS7MJ363G3W2G2A

    Take care.

January 30, 2007 at 5:41 am in reply to: Vista & Avid Express Pro

Vista is NOT supported by Avid at this time. I wouldn’t expect to see Avid support for this problematic, buggy new operating system for at least a year. I could be wrong, but based on past practice, a year is about how long the wait is before Avid jumps aboard a new Microsoft OS.

    Take care.

January 22, 2007 at 5:48 pm in reply to: Blending Modes

It just blows my mind that after all these years, Avid STILL does not have keyframeable, RT transfer-modes IN-SOFTWARE!!!

Yes, any Boris product that’s compatible with Avid will feature Transfer Modes (aka, Blend/Composite modes).

The free plugin is also known as “Dee Emm Enn Transfer” (make the words “Dee Emm Enn” 3 letters with no spaces between them, which is also the name of the forums site that allows them for free download). Great plugin, go get it! Note: it used to be known as “PE_Transfer AVX” and was made by Profround Effects, but the forum site just mentioned supposedly bought it off of PE and made it their own, now offering it free of charge.

    Take care.

January 19, 2007 at 5:50 am in reply to: Ramp effect plug-ins

3Prong’s SpeedRamp is a great effect, but it’s a weird interface to learn how to use. It will take some time to get the hang of it. Keep in mind that you can also do other great things with it as well, including 3:2 pulldown work, etc. Read up on it…that plugin will come in QUITE handy, I think you’ll find!

Also, Boris Continuum Complete AVX 3 and 4 include the “Optical Flow” effect that’s built into Boris Red 3 and 4…for a lot less. Consider that as well.

    Take care.

December 27, 2006 at 12:41 am in reply to: Which NLE to go for?…

I’d go with Media Composer software before I went with Xpress Pro…LOTS more functionality, and it’s just as stable as XPro. You could then add in Mojo/Mojo SDI to your suites if you felt inclined, or add in Adrenaline at a later time, or leave them as software-only.

December 27, 2006 at 12:39 am in reply to: MOJO SDi effects

Paint is only included in Media Composer software and higher. It’s not in Xpress Pro or lower. Keep in mind that Mojo and Mojo SDI can be used with either Xpress Pro or Media Composer software. Adrenaline is simply the hardware that’s a step-up from Mojo and powers the Media Composer Adrenaline system. In other words, Media Composer Adrenaline = Media Composer software + Adrenaline Hardware.

    Hope that helps.

December 18, 2006 at 6:15 am in reply to: 9mm/Film look effects

Have you tried some of the effect suites from Digital Film Tools? 55mm and Digital Film Lab are 2 that I’d check out first. https://www.digitalfilmtools.com

Or how about Magic Bullet Editors AVX or the full-blown Magic Bullet Suite for After Effects? https://www.redgiantsoftware

Also check out Boris Continuum Complete, which has some film-effect/film-look plugins included. https://www.borisfx.com

That should get you started. Good luck!

I would like to ask the same thing…I’ve never been able to figure this out either. Help would be appreciated.

December 1, 2006 at 5:50 pm in reply to: Circle Wipe – Can i make it look like looney tunes?

Apply the Circle Wipe Effect, and keep in mind that you will have to experiment somewhat to figure out just how many frames you need total for the effect. Create keyframes (enter Effect Mode and click the “Add Keyframe” button underneath the right-side, aka “record” side of the Composer monitor) in the middle of the effect to hold the wipe on your subject’s face. Adjust the keyframes as necessary using the controls in the Effect Editor. I don’t know if it will let you adjust the position of the circle wipe (I’ve never tried it and I’m not in front of my Avid), so there’s a chance the wipe will only be in the exact center of the screen. If that’s the case, and your subject doesn’t fall within that area, you might not be able to use this effect to achieve what it is you’re hoping for…

…however, if you’re on Avid XPro or above, go into the Effect Palette, click on the “Illusion FX” category, and select the Iris effect…which will give you EXACTLY what you want. Keyframe it the same way as above, and if I remember correctly, it will allow you to place the position of the circle you want, allowing you to keyframe it exactly where you want it and for the duration you want it.

Consult the manual on creating/editing effects if you need more help. You can access the online version from the Help Menu at the top-left of your screen.

    Hope that helps!

Boris makes several effects plugin suites, namely “Boris Continuum Complete,” “Boris Final Effects Complete,” and of course, Boris Red/Graffiti/FX. BCC is included in Avid Media Composer and Symphony Nitris. XPro users can get it, but they have to pay for it.

If you’re using XPro, get BCC and Boris Red (or Avid FX, which is nothing more than Boris Red with an Avid name on it…you can get Avid FX as part of the Avid Studio Toolkit option for XPro/Media Composer for $1295, which is cheaper than Boris Red on its own, plus adds 2 other programs!).

AE, as was mentioned above, is a stand-alone application. AMAZING and a must-have for any editing computer!
