    Chris-

I recommend taking a peak at either DFT’s 55mm or Digital Film Lab suites. I suspect you’ll be better off with 55mm, as it’s got lots of diffusion type filters (Mists, Gels, Soft Effects, etc.) I use it every day and it’s pretty affordable, too.

I don’t know if this will help you, but I suggest taking a peak at it.

    Good luck.

With XPro 5.2, you can get real-time effects out over firewire, which means that if you don’t have Mojo, you can hook up to a deck or camera and still see your FX in RT.

Mojo is in many ways a joke. In others, it rocks. Avid is well-aware of the users requesting something more powerful than Mojo that would fit between Mojo and Adrenaline. You’ll pay out the nose for it, though, if it ever comes to fruition.

One thing Mojo does that so many people forget about is act as a hardware accelerator. Not only is it an i/o device (with crappy connectors), but also a dedicated piece of video processing hardware to take the RT capabilities of your host computer and multiply it by something like 3. The problem with that is that Avid didn’t design it to support HD, so it’s worthless if you’re using HD material. It’s also 8-bit hardware.

For SD, it’s great. For HD, it’s worthless.

Top and Tail editing isn’t in Xpress Pro as of the current release 5.2.2. It’s never been in previous versions, either, though it existed in the now-defunct Xpress Meridien product. This is one of those features that is now only available in Media Composer Adrenaline and Symphony.

Again, we get back to the heated debate of how Avid should give us all the interface features of MCA, but that’s been beat to death. Scroll down a few postings under this one and you’ll see another thread about this that’s been going for some time…

  • Xpress Pro has had both Extend AND Replace edit commands since v4.0. You must enter the Command Palette and configure the button layouts for these 2 features to be available in the interface (timeline buttons) or on the keyboard.

    Correct.

  • Tristan-

You’re correct when it comes to Mojo’s power being hindered. There was a crack released a year ago (just after XPro HD 5 shipped) that turned your XPro 5 software into Media Composer Adrenaline HD 2.0 software, with the only missing features being Animatte and Pan-and-Scan. I personally never touched the crack myself (it makes the software extremely unstable and only works with 5.0–which was inherently unstable by itself), but I know a guy who not only has it, but still uses it to this day in his business. His Mojo and HP xw8000 workstation can push 3-5 streams of 1:1 SD video with effects, keys (from SpectraMatte), color-corrections, and transitions, PLUS an additional 2-5 streams of 1:1 graphics/titles in real-time. It doesn’t drop a single frame in playback. If you try and exceed the above number of streams, then it starts to hiccup a bit.

The limitation of 1-stream of 1:1 in RT are built into the software, and not the fault of Mojo.

    Michael-

It’s going to be amazing! There, have another nickel. Go buy a gumball or something. 🙂

  • Michael-

There are many who share your opinion, and it’s very valid. But there are those of us (like me) who LIKE that second row of buttons and want it there in case we need it. I find it very handy to have (and USE), even though I often use the keyboard for most of my editing.

My point is that it’s getting REALLY old that Avid keeps offering different interfaces for different products. XDV through Symphony Nitris all use the same Avid interface. Why not make them all the same? This goes WAY beyond the “2-rows” issue, it addresses other crucial features of the MCA interface missing in XDV/XPro, such as subframe audio editing (super-huge for me), reverse matchframe and others.

As a die-hard Avid lover/user, I think the time has come for Avid to start to up-the-ante on the high-end so they can start offering their “lower-end” customers the tools they not only need, but that are being offered by the competition. If Avid won’t offer these features, they need to step aside and focus exclusively on the higher-end…which I personally don’t think is really going to exist in 5-10 years. But hey, I’ve been wrong before and I could be wrong here.

    My $0.02.

January 18, 2006 at 9:50 pm in reply to: AE7.0 Yawning Gap

“Do you really want the AE dev team to spend their time creating functionality that most people already have in other apps?”

Yes, I do. The world’s largest software corporation, aka Adobe, can handle something so simple as that, and not force users into purchasing Premiere Pro, or use another NLE. It’s a great feature of combustion and has been there for 2 releases now (soon to be 3). Adobe kind of gave the ability in AE 7, but did it half-a$$ed by creating the new “Capture in Premiere Pro” command. It’s a start, but not where it should be.

Yes, there’s lots of other things I would like to see improved/included. This is but one of them.
