  • Hi Mike.

You are the second person who has suggested converting the images to .png. This is the first thing I have heard that makes any sense, so I will try that.

    Thank you.

  • Hey Douglas,

Why would Sony have a problem rendering large images, anyhow? I mean, what is the difference in rendering a 1920 x 1080 still image, as compared to 1920 x 1080i HDV?

Why would large still images make the system lock up, but HDV footage will render?

    What am I missing?

    Thank you,

    Norman

  • I guess my tech friend pointed out that either I need to substitute in a thumb drive for the paging file (to speed the paging file up), or else I need to tell Windows to shut the paging file off.

I guess I just want to use 1920 x 1080 sized still images as the backdrop for ministerial quotations. Sony says to use 640 x 480, or 720 x 540, but I think that will look ugly.

    Why can’t I use 1920 x 1080 images as a backdrop, when HDV film is 1920 x 1080? I don’t get it. What am I missing?

    Thank you,

  • Hi Douglas.

it is great to hear from you. I just bought your training videos, and am very much looking forward to watching them.

It’s a long story, but basically the video editing just got dumped in my lap, and I am trying to sort everything out. The previous editor had issues rendering HDV in Vegas. When he went to render, the project would not complete. In tracking down the help history at Sony, they said that basically the problem was that he was using too large of still images as backdrop for the text overlays. They said it causes the system to starve out for RAM. I thought I should try to solve that problem before I get started building the project, so I only have to do it once.

Sony recommends downsizing the images to 720 x 540. However, shouldn’t any still image for a backdrop in HDV mode be at least 1240 x 1080 (or else it will look grainy)?

If the problem is system starvation for RAM, I was wondering if it would help to mount a fast 8GB ‘ReadyBoost Capable’ thumb drive in the back of the machine and use it as a paging file, much like they do in Windows Vista. That might alleviate some of the strain off of the system RAM, and shouldn’t it be a lot faster than accessing the system hard drive page file?

In Windows XP, Start> Control Panel> System> Advanced> Performance> Advanced> Virtual Memory: if I mount a fast (‘Windows ReadyBoost Compatible) 8GB thumb drive, and then set the paging file as 8000, would it help take the strain off of the system RAM, so that I can render large in HDV with large images?

There is a lot I do not know here, and I am just shooting in the dark, trying to solve a known problem before I run into it, so I don’t have to hit the same known issue. Like I say I am very much looking forward to watching your videos, and getting started in Vegas.

Thank you very much for your help.

  • OK, I got some more clarity on this. Please let me refine the question.
Can using an 8GB USB memory stick (thumb drive) as the paging file improve system performance under Vegas, and can it help Vegas to overcome the problems with system lockup when rendering large images?

    Thanks, Steve.

Just to be clear, you like Instant HD and Instant HD Advanced more than you like Magic Bullet, and Topaz Enhance?

And if you get Instant HD Advanced, do you still need Instant HD, and/or Magic Bullet?

    Thank you,

I apologize for my ignorance. If you get Instant HD Advanced, do you still need Instant HD?

And can you please comment on the Instant HD feature in Red Giant Magic Bullet?

    Thank you.

Quote: The people of Boris FX are only partially right when they say that uprez is not available for Vegas since your Boris RED can function as an adapter for AE plugins. Once you have installed Boris Red or Boris FX, you can install the uprez plugin for AE in the plugin folder of Boris. Then Uprez is available from within Vegas via the Boris plugin.
    For me this works great…

The uprez plugin can be obtained from here:

Hi Theo. Thank you for this!

It is a long story but I got the video editing dumped in my lap, and am trying to get up to speed. Everyone says After Effects is a great plug-in to have, so I think I am going to get that in addition to RED. I have a few more programs to work through first, so we can start filming and editing, but hopefully I can get to this soon.

    Thank you for your help!

    Thank you, Steve.

Do you use both of these programs? Or may I please ask which of these programs you prefer, and why?

    Thank you very much.

[Nothing better than just shooting in HD, But for such
intricate task of converting SD to HD when needed, i suggest
just investing in “Topaz Enhance” or “Magic bullet Instant HD”
or if you want to do all that in Vegas, go for “Boris Red”.]

Hi. I am very interested in this. I have Boris Red, and am looking for the filter, but I do not see it.

I wrote BorisFX, and they said UpRez was not available for Vegas, but only for Avid and Premier.

Can you please help me find the filter you are talking about?

    Thank you.
