Hello. I understand Vegas hangs during rendering when using large images (photos). How can this problem be overcome when rendering HDV?
I went to the Sony site, and it appears the issue is a lack of RAM. Large images burn up all of the RAM.
I am using an XP 32 bit machine. Has anyone tried permanently mounting an 8GB thumb drive in their USB port as an 8GB paging file, to overcome the RAM limitations on image size?
I have a friend who uses this trick in PowerDirector, and he claims it reduced his rendering times from 2 hours to 30 minutes. But will this work in Vegas? Or are there any known issues?
    Thank you,
    Norman

OK, I got some more clarity on this. Please let me refine the question.
Can using an 8GB USB memory stick (thumb drive) as the paging file improve system performance under Vegas, and can it help Vegas to overcome the problems with system lockup when rendering large images?

What happens when you try it?
Why are you rendering from large images?

    Hi Douglas.

it is great to hear from you. I just bought your training videos, and am very much looking forward to watching them.

It’s a long story, but basically the video editing just got dumped in my lap, and I am trying to sort everything out. The previous editor had issues rendering HDV in Vegas. When he went to render, the project would not complete. In tracking down the help history at Sony, they said that basically the problem was that he was using too large of still images as backdrop for the text overlays. They said it causes the system to starve out for RAM. I thought I should try to solve that problem before I get started building the project, so I only have to do it once.

Sony recommends downsizing the images to 720 x 540. However, shouldn’t any still image for a backdrop in HDV mode be at least 1240 x 1080 (or else it will look grainy)?

If the problem is system starvation for RAM, I was wondering if it would help to mount a fast 8GB ‘ReadyBoost Capable’ thumb drive in the back of the machine and use it as a paging file, much like they do in Windows Vista. That might alleviate some of the strain off of the system RAM, and shouldn’t it be a lot faster than accessing the system hard drive page file?

In Windows XP, Start> Control Panel> System> Advanced> Performance> Advanced> Virtual Memory: if I mount a fast (‘Windows ReadyBoost Compatible) 8GB thumb drive, and then set the paging file as 8000, would it help take the strain off of the system RAM, so that I can render large in HDV with large images?

There is a lot I do not know here, and I am just shooting in the dark, trying to solve a known problem before I run into it, so I don’t have to hit the same known issue. Like I say I am very much looking forward to watching your videos, and getting started in Vegas.

Thank you very much for your help.

I guess my tech friend pointed out that either I need to substitute in a thumb drive for the paging file (to speed the paging file up), or else I need to tell Windows to shut the paging file off.

I guess I just want to use 1920 x 1080 sized still images as the backdrop for ministerial quotations. Sony says to use 640 x 480, or 720 x 540, but I think that will look ugly.

    Why can’t I use 1920 x 1080 images as a backdrop, when HDV film is 1920 x 1080? I don’t get it. What am I missing?

    Thank you,

    Hey Douglas,

Why would Sony have a problem rendering large images, anyhow? I mean, what is the difference in rendering a 1920 x 1080 still image, as compared to 1920 x 1080i HDV?

Why would large still images make the system lock up, but HDV footage will render?

    What am I missing?

    Thank you,

Norman, if the images are in JPEG format, try converting them to PNG as this is a format that Vegas seems to like.

    Hi Mike.

You are the second person who has suggested converting the images to .png. This is the first thing I have heard that makes any sense, so I will try that.

    Thank you.
