If you are just reframing, I would do all of that work in Photoshop and save a ton of time rendering in Vegas by having your images as close to video resolution as you project allows.
I need a better set-up, but at the moment I am just taking macro (close-up) photos of Scripture pages with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 under fluorescent lighting. That gives me a ~3MB .jpg. Vegas does not like .jpg’s, so I convert them to (a 10MB) .png with Irfanview, like you, Mike and Steve suggested. It works great, except for the occasional red event, which is usually resolved by a quick close-and-reopen.
I’ve got all your tutorial DVD’s, including the ones on Photoshop, and I am very eager to go through them all, but I have to get the new websites up and running first.
Is there some bracket or something I could use to brace my Lumix, pointing right straight down at the books about a foot away from the table, so I could take cleaner, more ‘head on’ shots of the pages? When one gets up on the page close like that, right now some of the shots come out at an oblique, and do not come out uniform. It is OK for now, but not as good as it could be.
Also it would be nice if there was some means of holding the pages open and flat, without breaking the spine of my books. Any ideas?

Did you purchase this machine already?
If you are going to use AVCHD natively you need at least a quad core. The only way to make it work with a dual core is to convert to .avi before you edit. The best converter going is Cineform NeoScene, best price $99.00 at Videoguys.com. I hope that helps.

It does seem like lots of people are having problems with the combination of 9.0 and Windows 7. (In fact, that is the main thing that has stopped me from upgrading to Win 7.)
I am on Build 896 here, and there is probably a newer one. Just to try it, you might want to download the latest version of 9.0c; and if that does not work, I think I would report the problem to Sony, and then roll back to Vista. It seems to work well enough.

Spin hard drives are so cheap right now. You can buy a Thermaltake BlackX external USB drive for maybe $20-30.00, and then get Seagate 1TB drives for less than $100.00. When that gets full (maybe 90 tapes later) you can store that hard drive in a Wiebetech anti-stat case, and pop in another 1TB hard drive (which will probably cost even less by then).
Three hours of AVCHD takes 32 GB on my Canon HF S10. One can put a total of 31 (each) three-hour takes on a 1TB drive, in the original .m2ts format. Or even once you convert to Cineform .avi you can still archive your whole project. Spin hdd cost is down, and continues to go down. It is ridiculously cheap, compared to all of the other components. Some guys make two copies.

Using too large of an image can make it show up as red?
I use 10MB .png’s a lot, because some times I zoom waaayyy in.
