It depends on what you are after. Sometimes people record in HD because it yields a much nicer looking DVD (and they don’t want to pay $6.00 per disk for BluRay).

Mark, what kind of filming are you wanting to do? If start/stop is OK, the T2i with Transcend SDHC cards should be OK (Class 10 is recommended, but some say Class 6 is OK). If you are on a Mac, transcode to ProRes. If you are on a PC, transcode to Cineform .avi with Cineform NeoScene ($99.00 https://www.videoguys.com). You should be ok in CS4 if you transcode (transcoding ‘relaxes’ the file sizes, making the footage easier for the processor to work with in real time. It also makes color grading easier). The stock 18-55mm lens is not great, but if $1000.00 is all you have, it is all you have. Content, not gear, is king: and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
If you want to take clips longer than 12 minutes, take a serious look at the Canon HF S10 or HF S11 (or equivalents) in AVCHD. They won’t cut a pro Blu-Ray, but they will make a spiffy DVD. I hope that helps.

You can use DV tapes, but they are not as reliable. If you lose data in an HDV machine you will have a full 1/2 second cutout. This is why people pay a premium for HDV tapes.
But have you looked at tapeless formats? I used to have an HDR-FX1, and I am much happier now that I went to tapeless.

Dialogue normalization was at -27dB, and the other two boxes were set at something else. I am re-rendering now.
Just so I know, if I make the Dialogue Normalization -20dB, does that make it louder, or softer?

I wish I could answer that, but I am on a PC with Cineform and Vegas. However, I think they are similar animals.
On a PC with Vegas and Cineform .avi, you can preview more layers in real time, because the processor does not have to uncompress the files at the time of the playback. I believe ProRes is the same.
Sounds like you’ve got a killer machine. Compressed or uncompressed, I don’t know why you would not be able to get realtime playback.

What is your processor/RAM, and your NLE?
And can you convert to Cineform .avi/mov, or ProRes? It makes the file sizes less compact, and therefore easier for the processor to handle on the fly.
