    If you are looking for the elastique for time stretching, pitch shift, then AFAIK you do not select this as a plug-in. When you stretch/compress an audio event, what happens is controlled by the audio event properties. There you will see an option for time stretch / pitch shift. If defaults to None. Choose elastique and adjust your elastique options to taste.

  • Sony seems to have been phasing out the Vegas term from the lower cost consumer version.

    Movie Studio 12 is the follow on to “vegas” Movie studio 11.

    MP4 is a generic container. It can contain anything.

    GoPro files are AVC video. It appears your EX3 files contain MPEG-2. Maybe the Windows thumbnailer only works when AVC is inside an MP4.

    The 765 update was pulled after release. A change to Mainconcpet AVC GPU encoding in CPU only mode to allow PCM audio output caused a bug with GPU encoding which still only supported AAC audio.

    They pulled 765, removed the change to allow PCM audio and released 770.

  • a) Split the event where you want the freeze. Make a subclip of that event. Make sure looping is off and extend the event the amount of time you want the still visible.

    b) Enable a velocity envelope and move the envelope to zero at the point you want a freeze. You will likely have to extend that clip a bit to compensate for the freeze duration.

    c) snapshot a still like you mentioned.

    Just saying MP4 does not describe what is inside the file, but most MP4 files have the AVC codec.

    AVC takes a lot more compute power to decode and higher bitrates and/or frame rates just make that even harder. That can cause playback issues with source files of this class.

    For example, on my machine, 2.9Ghz i7 my GoPro 1080p30 20Mbps files can playback smoothly, but 1080p60 30Mbps files cannot. Both in the MP4 container.

    I use the Vegas smart proxy feature as needed for source files beyond what my machine can handle in Vegas 12. The proxies are mpeg-2 format which is pretty easy to decode.

    You can use intermediate formats also. GoPro Studio can convert to Cineform AVI files. This is what replaces the NeoScene software. There is DNxHD for Quicktime. In Vegas 12 you can try HDCAM SR Lite as an inter format.

    The media player is probably using the hardware decode facility of the video hardware. That is fine for players, but editors most likely need to have the decoder separated.

    High bitrate AVC does requires a lot of CPU juice to decode, so yes a single AVC stream can max you out, and two can max out both cores.

    On my machine, core i7 860 2.9Ghz, my GoPro AVC 1080p30 20Mbps files are close to maxing out a single logical core. 1080p60 30Mbps files cannot preview because because that logical core is over max. In these situations my CPU percentage is very low, like 15%. The other cores are not doing anything since a single CPU does the decode of a single video stream.

  • “MXF” is just a file container and does not imply any video standard. In Vegas you can create an MXF file containing XDCAM MPEG-2, HDCAM SR (MPEG-4 SStp) and XAVC.

    Really anything is fine for “archive” if the video quality of that format is up to your standards. Archive can mean different things to different people.

    If you are looking for a format which has as little compression as is bearable (aka file size) then some of the high bitrate formats are what you want to look at.

    HDCAM SR, SR Lite has some very high quality formats. HDCAM SR may not be supported by some tools. It its original tape format it is a standard, but the generic file use is kinda new.

    XAVC Intra is high quality. It is the AVC codec which is basically universal.

    The flicker you talk about might be due to a low minimum bitrate MC AVC might be using. Incorrectly too low as some would say. We are not given control over the minimum bitrate. In one pass VBR MC AVC probably uses a different min bitrate.

    MC AVC does not give us good control over CBR bitrates. We cannot enter a value and are stuck with preset bitrates. Just use one pass VBR so you can enter the bitrate you want. Also since your entered settings restrict variability (max close to average) you are trying to force CBR from VBR already.

    MC AVC one pass VBR is probably a lot like Sony AVC. Variable bitrate, but with a tight variation range.

    I use Sony AVC mostly, but as I remember, MC AVC one pass is much more accurate hitting your entered average bitrate than two pass.
