I’d go with a set top. If it doesn’t need to look cool vis a vis menus they are VTR simple to operate with minimum fuss.

I’d go hard drives. They’re cheap enough these days to archive to- especially internal SATAs you can dock with. If you want something more expendable, you can go LTO, DLT or the like.

Why does my car door unlock every time I put it into park? What if I am pulling into an unsafe neighborhood and I don’t want the doors to unlock immediately? Engineers make these choices and for most folks they work fine but there’s always going to be quibbles.
I can say for my tastes I find this cam to have more design and ergonomic plusses over negatives than any other prosumer camera I’ve owned. Is it perfect- no. Is it closer to perfection than anything else I’ve shot with- you betcha.
You want annoying- how about a Sony VX1000? Every time you want to access the user menu, you have to open the battery compartment- weird… And the cable connecting the color viewfinder can be easily blown out simply by flipping the viewfinder up enough times. Bottom line- you can’t please everyone with every aspect of every camera.

I’ve personally found the integration back and forth to be too unreliable for my tastes. Instead I recommend export to QuickTime from FCP and Motion and importing at the opposite end. It works and you spend just a little more time with rendering.

P2 uses SD cards- not NAND. Still if the memory market in general is in flux that could be a good thing.

Sorry can’t help you there as I’m not a discreet edit user past or present. I can say from my experience that *most* NLEs do crappy slow mo that you’ll pretty much have to live with if you’re unable to afford or utilize another more properly suited app.

What export settings are you using? The animation codec gives the least amount of quality loss going back and forth.

I don’t have the ability to provide all the research for you- googling or epinions.com will give you plenty of details. But as someone who’s been at this for almost a decade I can just say to take my word for it that you get what you pay for. And if you pay less than the going rate you’ll be getting a lot of runaround, cheesy pressure sales and wasted time rather than the gear you want.

I’d highly recommend removing the pulldown via your editing software or After Effects *before* attempting a matchmove. Otherwise you’ll be feeding it footage effectively with both interlaced and progressive frames.

How about a layer in Photoshop with half alpha and half image. That ought to do it as a layer.
