    hi

wow ya know i just forget how diverse the cow is! i am looking around for info, and lo and behold, there is a forum for my producers camera! i hope its a good place to ask a couple o questions:

I am using an older NLE (discreet edit) that only does 29.97. I have show that was shot at 24P or 24A, not sure which, and i wanted to do slo mo and not get that pesky judder that happens when you
use odd speed settings on 3:2 stuff.

is there any way, through a combination of varispeed, strobing, interpolation etc to get smooth slo mo ie i would think if i sped it up to 125% and strobed it i would get 30 fps, which i could then varispeed no end?

    2. if a have to run it through AE, can i just find the 3:2 sequence of the shot, then render it out to make it 30, or do i need to speed it up as well (again 125%)

BITD, we would transfer any slo mo shots at 30 fps to video, and manipulate it then, adding the pull down after (usually with a quantel harry) so iguess i m thinking along those lines

    thanks for your help!

Best slow-mo is through 3rd party plugins like re:timer. Most NLE’s do pretty cruddy looking slowmo.

    hi noah thanx!

unfortunately, i have no access to re:timer, nor will i.(can you say low budget?) However i agree that its awesome compared to just slowing stuff down.

the NLE i am using does do a decent job, using frameblending, variable interpretation, half and quarter field vertical compensation. And on video projects in the past, its been happily accepted by client.

Soooooo, that being said, just wanna know how to minimize or eliminate the apparent frame jumping, ie judder, that i get when i slow down material thats 3:2.

(i know i can run it through AE, but i may have a lot of clips to slow down, so if i could do some combination of speed up, strobing, slowdown, to smooooth it out, that would be better

    thanx again

Sorry can’t help you there as I’m not a discreet edit user past or present. I can say from my experience that *most* NLEs do crappy slow mo that you’ll pretty much have to live with if you’re unable to afford or utilize another more properly suited app.
