The Panasonic MQ63 tapes have served me very well over the years.

In theory Digibeta would be among the easiest because it is the least compressed relatively speaking- when coming off the camera tape. There would be the requirement of capturing to a third-party capture card, requiring a lot of storage space and an expensive DigiBeta deck rental for ingest. If you wanted to stay in the Panasonic/24p/Firewire capture universe you would go with an SDX900 in DVCPRO50.
Of course you are also losing a lot of definition in the bump down from HD to SD so it would depend on your intended delivery format. There’s also the potential of shooting 16mm or 35mm which could be digitally scanned in post to a very high resolution and bit depth- providing a potentially very clean comp.
I have an upcoming project with a lot of greenscreen and I intend to deliver an HD master. I have been exploring the possibility of shooting on an SDX900 and bumping the final output up to HD as opposed to incurring the extra expense and infrastructure required to shoot uncompressed HD. My experience with compositing SDX900 footage on SD projects thus far has been highly positive.

ps- are you really named OneMatchFire? 🙂

I’d suggest having it serviced- sounds like the heads could use a professional cleaning. This is even more likely the case if you’ve used different brands of DV tape stocks over the life of the cam.

Because not everyone has the ability to capture via Firewire- only Final Cut Pro and some flavors of Avid. Everyone else must go HDSDI into their editing systems. And yes they are essentially wasting vast amounts of space without adding back any resolution by capturing this way.
The camera itself has SDI out because you can bypass the compression _if_ you capture uncompressed before the signal hits the onboard deck but otherwise there’s nothing to be gained- as mentioned in the posts above.

That’s the point my friend- once it’s on tape it doesn’t matter. You are compositing DVCPROHD whether you capture it digitally via Firewire or wrap a huge uncompressed blanket around it. The original uncompressed info is lost the second you record to tape. That said it is not that hard to get a good key off DVCPROHD. Just more work to tweak in post and you’ll need to nail it in production with good lighting.

The LiveType ipr file size does not have a bearing on the DVD bitrate. Have a peek through the manual regarding Compressor and MPEG-2 creation. You need to lower the bitrate setting of the video causing the error. I’d suggest keeping the max well below 8Mbps.

Might want to spend an afternoon looking into the manual. Also- buy Barry’s DVD. It goes step by step through every setting on the camera and what it does:
