For me the bottom line would be- how does it resolve back to 24 frames progressive so it can be put onto to film and how does it look i.e. does it look like filmic motion or the odd effect of CF24?

AFAIK there hasn’t been a major change. The camera is firmware upgradeable.

I’d agree that FW400 in practice is not ideal for multiple DVCPROHD streams- 800 is much better. And of course a good RAID will do even better. Still- a speedy FW400 drive can do the job in a pinch and not all are created equal. Visit barefeats.com to find out how to get the most out of your drives.

Best thing would be to hook up to an HDCAM deck- whose daily rental rate would quickly eclipse the cost of the camera or to a decktop with an HD-SDI capture card like a BMD or a Kona.

Any menus you create in DVDSP will be re-encoded. So if you are already supplying menu videos as Bitvice MPEG-2s they are being re-encoded a second time using the video compression settings. Probably makes a big difference with the pixelation.

Yes to all questions. DVCPROHD runs at a maximum speed of 100Mbits. Firewire is capable of playing up to 400 Mbits, Firewire 800 is capable of 800 Mbits- either is more than enough to handle all flavors of the HVX including DVCPRO50/24p/16:9. I suspect you are thinking of uncompressed high definition which would require a RAID but is not an issue here because that is not what this camera shoots.

Yes- FCP is already set up for all flavors of the HVX200 including DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD. That’s why FCP 4.5 is called FCP HD- specifically for Panasonic DVCPROHD which is what the HVX200 shoots. You can use Firewire drives- no special hardware is required.

There is a preference setting for this. You can definitely send it out to a Firewire camera or deck so perhaps the AJA can do the same.

I learned a lot by going through some of the tutorials on Maxon’s site with the demo version. It’s really not that tricky once you understand how the basics are laid out. I’ve played with Lightwave, Maya and Max many times but never learned them at all. I feel great about C4D so far.

Faster processor is all that would help in that case.
