There’s something to be said for protection against casual copying.
I think there might be even more methods worth researching. I recently did a job editing together a reel of material for a friend. One of the sources was a dub made on a desktop DVD recorder- where you feed in video and it records right to DVD. For the life of me I could not rip that disc- and it was to his knowlege recorded without any copy protection engaged on the set top. All my tools were crashing on it. So there may be more out there to look into.

I would go to an electronics store- like Best Buy or what have you. The DVX100 uses the same battery mount as consumer Panasonic cameras. So the standard cheap chargers work fine. I got one for under $40 that fast charges faster than the one that comes with the camera. Also highly recommend the DVXuser.com batteries- they are amazingly long lasting. Just did a 2 day shoot on 2 of them with only end of day charging required.

Pretty vast difference. Main advantage of the Z1 is price and use of tapes. HVX has it beat with higher quality HD compression and a greater variety of frame rates(including 60p and 24p) as well as 720p.

You cannot reset timecode on an already recorded tape but a Firewire transfer will create a tape with fresh TC. It’s not going to be an issue with editing if you are cutting in DV because once you have it in the computer you won’t ever go back to the source tapes anyway.

Sure Motion 2 with the 3D filter would be a good start. Also After FX would be capable of more elaborate 3d or Shake.

Sounds like the drive as the DVX is pretty much doing nothing but acting as a bridge. You should also check the source tapes to make sure they were not corrupted when you digitized them. You should also try exporting the entire project to a single file by File>Export Quicktime Movie. Current Settings, Uncheck recompress all frames, Check Make Movie Self-Contained.

Sure you could do something like this in many ways- with the replicator for example or one of the distortion filters. Though truth be told the Aperture effect was possibly done in something like Shake.

Great idea! I’m assuming this is Motion 2 only? Couldn’t get it to work in Motion 1.
