Yep- it’s about as awesome as one could want. Especially at this price….

Limiter and automatic gain control are not the same thing. Limited imposes a hard upper limit to wherever you set your audio, AGC attempts to ride the entire audio level up and down- which generally sounds quite bad as it also rides the ambience level up too.

Yeah you have to be really careful with your sounds- if you’re peaking too much you need to consider manually riding the levels or an outboard mixer. No limiter is going to catch every overmod.

Yeah wrong editor for XDCAM EX footage- you would need something modern. FCP7, FCPX Avid, Premiere, i.e. anything but FCP 5 which is definitely not capable of dealing with this camera directly.

Yeah most replicators can work directly from a DVD-R with zero issues. Never made a single disc off DDP myself.

Yeah the friend is mistaken- if he gets your footage as card archives from the camera itself he’ll be able to ingest as DVCPROHD directly and be good to go from there. File>Log and Transfer. Just make sure to copy your footage as the entire structure from the card, each card into its own discrete folder and it will be good to go.

Better sound- finer control, etc. Not to say you have to buy the best to get good sound but the more you spend and take the time to really learn how to get good sound- mic placement, etc the better you’ll do. Personally I don’t use a field mixer as I’m usually just working with a single mic at a pretty consistent vocal level. However once you start recording multiple mics and dealing with varying levels a field mixer will help you get better sound.

Yeah that would be a major quality hit, plus good luck recreating the exact flavor of AVCHD footage the friend uses. If this is presumably for editing the two together- any modern NLE will do this step for you and mix accordingly at best possible quality.
Just turn over your DVCPROHD footage as complete copies of the entire card structure from your camera and let them take it from there. Or if you want to be extra nice- convert to a more robust format like DNxHD, CineForm or ProRes- depending on where you’re coming from. But finding out a bit more on the why you need this would help.

The Audio Section on the left side of the camera controls this. You would switch CH1 SELECT to Input 1 or Input 2 for XLR and CH 2 SELECT to Input 2.
