Yeah that would be a major quality hit, plus good luck recreating the exact flavor of AVCHD footage the friend uses. If this is presumably for editing the two together- any modern NLE will do this step for you and mix accordingly at best possible quality.

Just turn over your DVCPROHD footage as complete copies of the entire card structure from your camera and let them take it from there. Or if you want to be extra nice- convert to a more robust format like DNxHD, CineForm or ProRes- depending on where you’re coming from. But finding out a bit more on the why you need this would help.

As you both suggest, it’s not my choice. I thot it would make my friend’s life easier if I converted to his format, even tho it’s lower res.
He tells me that FCP doesn’t speak AVCHD and that he uses a converter.
I agree that letting him sew them together is easier

FCP speaks AVCHD the same way it speaks P2…the footage needs to be accessed via Log and Transfer and brought in that way. FCP doesn’t deal with either format natively.

Give them the card backup, as I outline in the video. Do not try to make it AVCHD in any way, shape or form.

Yeah the friend is mistaken- if he gets your footage as card archives from the camera itself he’ll be able to ingest as DVCPROHD directly and be good to go from there. File>Log and Transfer. Just make sure to copy your footage as the entire structure from the card, each card into its own discrete folder and it will be good to go.
