That’s a bit of a catch-22. If you by run and gun you mean easy to fudge critical focus- no S35 sensor camera is ever going to work for you. That or you need to really practice with your manual focusing. So it kind of depends what you really mean when you say run and gun. In my mind that means small sensor cameras where the depth of field is massively forgiving. Of course the flipside is you don’t get that more cinematic looking shallow DOF look you may want…

I’m using Vimeo Pro to privately share video files. 99% of the time the clients are thrilled because they can see it instantly in HD on their computer/device/etc. Only getting DVD requests when clients need to ensure compliance with many satellite offices that don’t have up to date browsers or good internet capability. And did I mention you can advertise how you’re saving all that postage/waste discs/carbon etc…

I have both sets on my system- they do not interfere but I would suggest making a backup of your current FCS apps just to be on the safe side.

The Send to Motion functionality in FCP 7 doesn’t interface with Motion 5 nor do effects/filters/transition you build in Motion 5 work in 7. Basically the only thing you could do is export completed animations in 5 that you could then import into 7 but for everything else you’d stay on 4.

That said- a good monitor with waveform and vectorscope would be wise to get the cameras setup as close as possible so you don’t have to spend all your time matching them in post.

Yeah to be honest AVCHD on SDHC cards is a way better experience than DVCPROHD on P2 cards. The cards are a lot faster, a *lot* cheaper and AVCHD as a codec is incredibly efficient.
You’ll not see a difference in all but the most extreme conditions and when that very slight difference in image quality is compared against the depth of field effects you get with that much bigger chip, it tips the scales for me. The AF100 is a lot of fun.
That said, if you’re used to shooting a small chip camcorder shallow depth of field can be a double edged sword- i.e. you’re going to be paying a lot more attention to focus than you have had to before.

Haven’t had a lot of need for DVDs lately but when I do- definitely still using DVDSP. Haven’t seen a better tool for the job.

That’d be a pretty rough thing to match in post. Can’t you get a second 7D and an audio recorder with XLR such as a Zoom or a Sound Devices? You’ll get better sound and sync is pretty easy in post these days. You’re already going to have to sync the two angles- why not add great audio and not complicate your life with a very different image you’ll be constantly fighting to correct in post.

Not so fast- not only is double-system sound really a piece of cake especially if you have Pluraleyes or an NLE with auto audio syncing built in such as FCP X. But it’s pretty much the ‘pro’ way to do it and has been for decades with film cameras which don’t record sound at all. I don’t see it as a compromise one bit. I see it as the way to do it if you care about both picture *and* sound quality.

Nope- do not remove a field that’s halving your resolution. Lemme guess- you went directly from 1080i to MPEG-2? That’s not the best way to do it, because downconversion and encoding at the same time=low quality. Instead- output a standard definition 16:9 version of your 1080i timeline first to ProRes. Then use that as an MPEG-2 source for your DVD. Guarantee it will come out great…
