motion 5 app and fcp 7?
Posted by Michael Williams on July 8, 2012 at 8:50 pmI’m purchasing FCP X and I still have FCP 7 and I plan to use both in the future. If I purchase the new Motion 5 app will that work with both FCP versions or do I need to still use Motion 4 with FCP 7?
thanks,
Mike

July 9, 2012 at 5:24 pmThe Send to Motion functionality in FCP 7 doesn’t interface with Motion 5 nor do effects/filters/transition you build in Motion 5 work in 7. Basically the only thing you could do is export completed animations in 5 that you could then import into 7 but for everything else you’d stay on 4.

July 9, 2012 at 5:47 pmThanks, Noah.
Does that mean that if I have both FCP programs and both Motion programs that they will each integrate with their appropriate counterpart without me having to do anything above and beyond normal operations?
Or, will having two of each application cause problems that I am unaware of?
thanks again.

July 9, 2012 at 6:27 pmI have both sets on my system- they do not interfere but I would suggest making a backup of your current FCS apps just to be on the safe side.

I’m in the same situation with both 7 & X and M4 & 5 and they do interfere a little. If the OS can find Motion 5 it will make it the default for opening motion projects even if they were created in Motion 4. So if you’ve an FCP timeline with a motion project in, and you want to adjust it, it will open in Motion 5. My work around is to open the motion file from the finder in M4.
Pretty sure M5 works fine with FCP 7 for creating new content – least I haven’t had an issue yet.Nigel Beaumont
