I’d definitely go to a direct ProRes/ hard drive recording setup for studio work. If not the KiPro there’s also the Hyperdeck Shuttle from Blackmagic.

I could see something where you feed the camera’s video and a GPS into a keyer and then record that signal. Or put a GPS unit somewhere in the frame where it’s not blocking anything else and just record it that way. But within the camera itself somehow, not sure that’s possible.

Lens would make all the difference in the world. The Lumix zoom you have is fine but probably a decent Prime would look doubly sharp when compared side by side to it.

It’s really the limit of the imager and SD resolution that’s the issue, not DV itself. DV is a pretty efficient codec- considering it’s 25 mbits just for 720×480 when many HD cameras today use less bits to capture 720p or 1080p.
There was something called the aurora hack I believe a while ago that could boost the camera a certain extent. But that would cost you more than simply buying a new HD camcorder. Really any DSLR would blow the DVX away in terms of pure image resolution.
If you wanted to go S-video directly to an outboard recorder check out AJA or Blackmagic for possible solutions. But again you’ll find that the quality/cost ratio makes no sense vs. simply getting a newer camcorder.

First expand Audio/Video (Control-S). Then you can trim audio and video independently.

as you’d probably never finish a project completely in Motion I don’t see this as a big deal. You could always go HDMI to a monitor if you were concerned about framing or such but most likely you’d be doing your final output in FCPX or something like DaVinci where broadcast monitoring is much more critical.

You pretty much nailed it- performance in post. Generally speaking the transcode into ProRes trades file size for optimized quality and much more efficient performance. It’s worth investing in hard drives- cheap as they are today to make it work.

NAB is coming up in a couple of months. As much of the veneer of Varicam was variable frame rates in HD and that functionality now exists in most Panasonic camcorders (really most HD camcorders- period today) I’d guess the name itself is not getting too much more attention. But I could be wrong…
