It’s a bit of a challenge to find because it’s a great camera. I have been shooting with it for a year now. Just a quick suggestion for you, as it took me a bit of searching to find a good way to transport it. The Quantaray Pro U-100 is the best bag I have found, great for travel, etc. I am able to fit my XH-A1, a shotgun mic, a set of sennheiser wireless lavs, extra battery, and my laptop. Good luck.

    Danny,

I have dealt with this issue before. While I was not shooting in HD, I was shooting on the XH-A1. I don’t think HD is the issue–it’s how Quicktime and FCP deal with 24f-(23.98). Is there audio sync slip just in FCP, but not when you open the captured file in Quicktime directly from your capture scratch on your hard drive?

Or is the file out of sync in the viwer, the canvas, and in Quicktime proper?

    Check:
    Do not open FCP
Open your movie file directly from your hard drive.
It should open automatically in Quicktime.
If this file plays back correctly, but it has audio sync slippage in FCP, then here is the work-around I have used:

    open file in QT
    export:options:settings
    settings:
    frame rate: custom 23.98
    compressor type: DvDVCPRO-ntsc
    scan mode: progressive
    aspect ratio: 16:9
    uncheck internet streaming
    quality at BEST

    Hope this serves you.

An editing consideration vs. technical consideration

When I have been in this same situation, filming speakers in front of slides, usually it is because they want their presentation filmed. I have noticed that a slide never looks as good filmed as it does if you can get the actual image file and edit it into the speech when you are in post.

I’d ask the speakers for the jpegs and ppt. doc, then I can focus on the speaker for the duration of the presentation, and edit the images in, nice and clean in post.

Found another way to remove audio sync drift in 24f:

open files in Quicktime (not through FCP), directly from hard drive

    select:file:

    export:options:settings

    settings:
    frame rate: custom 23.98
    compressor type: DvDVCPRO-ntsc
    scan mode: progressive
    aspect ratio: 16:9
    uncheck internet streaming
    quality at BEST

    Export.

(Change the name of the file if you need to, because otherwise you will have two files, the original with audio-sync drift when played through FCP, and the new version.)

This is a much faster work-around than re-digitizing the media.
