Canon XH-A1 HD footage works but audio is way delayed!
Hey guys, I know a lot of people complain on here about how they cannot get their HD footage to properly import onto their computer. I am running final cut 5.1 on a macbook pro and am trying to get my new HD footage 1080i @24 fps onto my computer. I imported the entire 50 minute long tape and and instantly fell in love with my quality, but then i turned up my volume to find it to be WAY out of sync..when i am importing it says that the capture is delayed a specific percentage, do you think that could be whats causing it?

There are a lot more qualified individuals here than I am, but a few thoughts. Assuming everything is in sync when you watch from the camera, how are you capturing? Converting to ProRes? Batch Capture? Capture Now?
If you’re not doing a ProRes through FireWire conversion when capturing, there shouldn’t be a delay. Is there a sync issue when you just watch the clip in the viewer or only from the timeline? Have you confirmed your sequence setting are 23.98 (24p)?
I’ve been capturing Canon’s 24f from an A1 into a MacBook Pro for years without a sync issue, so I know it can be solved.

It is showing you a percentage delayed because FCP cannot show you realtime HDV capture. I assume you are hearing this when you capture (not import) your tape. This is normal.

First off, thanks for the reply. Now I cant do the PRO RES because i am not using final cut 6. What do you have under your audio/video settings when you import your footage? -
See my problem isn’t the video, its strictly the audio. Not only is it out of sync, it also is changing positions each time from shot to shot, making it impossible to simply rematch the two.

I have dealt with this issue before. While I was not shooting in HD, I was shooting on the XH-A1. I don’t think HD is the issue–it’s how Quicktime and FCP deal with 24f-(23.98). Is there audio sync slip just in FCP, but not when you open the captured file in Quicktime directly from your capture scratch on your hard drive?
Or is the file out of sync in the viwer, the canvas, and in Quicktime proper?
Check:
Do not open FCP
Open your movie file directly from your hard drive.
It should open automatically in Quicktime.
If this file plays back correctly, but it has audio sync slippage in FCP, then here is the work-around I have used:open file in QT
export:options:settings
settings:
frame rate: custom 23.98
compressor type: DvDVCPRO-ntsc
scan mode: progressive
aspect ratio: 16:9
uncheck internet streaming
quality at BESTHope this serves you.
