April 30, 2013 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Pro-res files getting huge when encoded to H264 in compressorI haven’t exported from compressor for a few years now, it true that the slider gets overridden but as far as I can remember that depends on the order you set things, maybe I’m wrong, but I do remember having exportet h.264 in 75%.
I use MPEG Streamclip to export h.264 (after rendering a reference in FCP7 or a Prores in FCPX) When the quality is set to 75% you get a usable size (4min = 400 Mb) and a very good quality. This is something I learned from one of the postproductions I work for and we are currently using this method at Promiflash.
But If files need to be smaller and still look good it’s better to change the bitrate.

April 30, 2013 at 11:18 am in reply to: DECKLINK HD EXTREME 3D recognized in FCP X but not outputting wellCraig,
you probably just need to turn off your system and reconnect the Decklink. Then open Desktop Video and make sure it’s set to HD
We had this problem a few weeks ago at Promiflash in Berlin with the mini Monitor. From one day to the next FCPx only showed the NTSC SD option, and while sound recording in Protools only the Speaker had an image on her monitor.
In our case we have it daisy changed from iMac connected to the Thunderbolt Apollo Audio Interface connected to the minimonitor connected to sdi-hdmi converters routed to 3 Monitors.
When we had that problem I shut everything down, diconnected the power on the sdi-hdmi converters, waited a few minutes, turned everything back on and everything was back to normal.

You need to be sure to use the correct folder structure for FCPX to be able to read the events and project. In your External HD you need to to have a Final Cut Events and a Final Cut Projects folder where your event and Project folders are located, like this:
External Drive/Final Cut Events/Event
External Drive/Final Cut Projects/ Project
Once you open FCPX it should recognize the external drive and the Events and Projects. You don’t need to re-import anything

April 29, 2013 at 1:39 pm in reply to: 4K versus 2.5K versus PCC – Decisions, DecisionsThe 4k BMCC records in 4K APPLE PRO RES HQ 10bit and 1080p Pro Res 10bit , the 2k BMCC records 1080p Pro Res 10bit , but 2,5 K only in RAW 12bit as far as I can tell. 4k Apple Pro Res should generate smaller files (?)
I had my previous 2K BMCC EF order cancelled last week. The S-35mm sensor on the 4k makes more sense since I own a Canon EF-S lens anyway. I’ll be using it mostly in 1080p.
I’m also planning on getting a PCC…and it has a removable battery…:-)

I’ve actually never had an issue with the speed of FCPX, especially since you can start working while it transcodes footage, although it does lag at times.
10.0.8 added some compatibility. I usually work with h.264, apple prores and xdcam. I imported some AVCHD yesterday without rendering optimized nor proxies and it was very fluid, also works with h.264.

Looks like FCPX with fixed tracks:-) but at the moment I prefer the magnetic timeline:-))
I doubt it has as many editing features as dedicated NLE. For Editors who don’t do much or any serious color grading it probably won’t be the the right tool at the moment.
I would be cool if Resolve developed into something like Smoke. Then Blackmagic should come up with their version of a Pro Desktop PC, capable of running FCPX, Avid and Premiere.

By using FCPX the director assembles his rough, gives the event and project to an editor who continues working in X.
We use this method at Promiflash in Berlin, our producers assemble their stories during the day, in the evening the editor shows up and opens the rough cut projects. X is a very powerful software that is very easy to learn. It took our producers a few hours to get accustomed to the basics. I trained one of our editors one day before she started. They had hard time finding fast mtv style editors with X experience.
So far using FCPX has payed off very well for me.

Can you paste the attributes on multiple clips at once? That’s what I did in Legacy many years ago before I figured out that it had a Paste Effects Panel. It works faster that way, it was one of my very few big issues I had with FCPX 10.0.1, there was no way to copy effects, until 10.0.4, or use an adjustment layer.
