aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaartggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh! and even then I thought I saw better preview as I set lower quality PP…then that stopped as well, and it was _Preview Quality_ that made it smoother if less quality.
So WTH _does_ PP do? Still seems a mess.
Please correct me. I keep asking.
EDIT: Let me put it this way. I am willing to put up with various levels of quality and smoothness when editing. I can see where the PP and the Preview Quality settings work there.
But _always_ I am told that in order to get the right render, I _have_ to have the right PP settings. I can’t see how it ties in with rendering.

OK. I did some really rough experiments.
If I set the Project Properties, _some_ of it affects the way the _preview_ works (amaller frame size = smoother preview, but with pixels…etc).
But if I set the “wrong” Aspect Ratio, it stuffs up rendering as well. AFAICS no other settings make ANY difference to the render. Just how I preview.
The lower pane of the PP settings may or may not affect the output, depending on the renderer I use: if it does not take care of the parameters that I set in PP, then PP will take over.
I get the feeling that Project Properties is a Cinderalla setup, that needs re-vamping badly….no…that badly needs re-vamping.
Hence the fact that I am being told to use this and that, but nobody has been able to tell me why.
Please feel free to correct m,e if I am wrong.

OK. Thanks.
I was doing a bit of research and found a post that said “We do not do it, because it’s not reliable.” or words to that effect. So I assume it was a Sony guy. It was a couple of years old so I thought I might wait for a more recent answer, especially as the original message was that QT install would fix it.

You are helping me all over the place right now man! 🙂
yeah I am going to do some experimenting with non-half frame rate versions (25->24, 25->30, 50->30 etc) and the resample switch and see what happens. A whole new area of interest and probable frustration! 😀 I already tried a couple, because I read about the blend vs straight stuff with different frame rates after you gave me the lead. HAH! It was probably you that I read! It’s a tricky one. It’s a pity you can’t have a template that does it, so you don’t have to keep changing the switch on every event for different situations.

OK. Thanks. Makes sense. I will give that a go. I just hope I can find a monitor that does 75hz. It’s a pity if true, because the main PC-driven TV is also our watch stuff screen and it only does 60hz max. Even so I will try 50Hz
After I posted this, in the interests of research 🙂 I used some raw 25fps footage from my camera. The stuff rendered from a 50hz source was more jittery.I can’t do a direct comparison really. The camera puts out 25i, not 25p 🙁
hmm…tried 50Hz on the TV and it made no discernible difference. The trouble is the more you compress, the more artefacts come into it, but if you don;t compress, you can start to see choppiness caused by simple data rates….or so I have seen.

Oh good Lord! Thank you. I have asked about this so often, and been run around so many codecs and told this and that, and there it was. Disable Resampling. And those few extra words telling me how, which can be so heartening.
I am just so relieved, but a little peeved at all the times I have asked this and been given so much gobbledegook.
My apologies to anyone who is reading this and thinking “But I told him that!” At the time I was just getting so much info, most of it not Vegas-related, that I may have missed some.
So again, hero, thank you.
Gushing ceases. 🙂

OK. I will be more specific. This is regardless of bit rate, frame size, as far as I can see.
I render from a 1080 50p source. I want to make various sized frames and files for say, DVD, others’ screen showing, upload etc.
I realise that a small frame size, enlarged to full scree, will look pretty grainy. Too much enlargement.
I realise that a low bit rate will cause smearing and blurring at the very least. Too much compression.
This is another issue.
If I render a video to avi, using x264 codec, Upper (or Lower) frame first, I get interlacing problems: lines across the screen when anything moves. If I use Progressive Frame method, I get a “ghosting” whereby AFAICS, instead of blurring slightly to allow the .lower frame rate to show smoothly, the result is a series of “stills” in each frame, for any part that moves: so the main, full density, say person’s hand, and also several other ghosted ones that depict its path across the FOV. This results in a jittery appearance.
I have posted up a still of the result.
EDIT: BUT WHERE IS IT?
If I use the Vegas native Program Stream PAL Widescreen, 25i, UFF, with mpeg-2 encoder (I can use DV encoder, but it limits size), CBR 9,800,000, with say, 720*400 frame size, I get a very reasonable output: freezing shows a small amount of compression smear, and the small frame can add artefacts. BUT there is no sign of ghosting. Each frame if frozen is fine, even in areas of high activity.
AND …there is no sign of interlace problems.
If I use 25p instead of 25i, I get the ghosting again.
So shy is the x264 avi package giving me _either_ interlace (25i) _or_ ghosting (25p), but the mpeg-2 avi package gives me _no_ interlace trouble at 25i, but ghosting at 25p?
I cannot remember a case where using 25p worked for me. As I said I assumed that was what I should use, as the original, which looks verrrrry nice, is 50p. If I render to 50p that works fine as well. IT’s on,y when dropping the frame rate.
Sometimes, depending on encoder, UFF or LFF give interlacing signs, others not.
Same goes with most of the Sony mp4 stuff that is available with Vegas Studio.
As usual I apologise if this is vague. I am still very confused, although at least now I can get some good outputs.
Thanks for any help

Well wow! I really thank you for the input.
I DID back up the templates! Cautious, me, I am! 😀
However when I tried to reinstall, I was told I had to uninstall Movie Studio first. I did. Then I reinstalled….and the templates were there anyway.
But I feel your advice to trace and back them up is a good one. It’s just a pity that I had to trawl the web to find the right folder. I feel that every programme should have to disclose all folders and stuff. It can lead to hacking and trouble, but so many programmes cause their own trouble and sometimes just knowing where files are can save so much.
And they seem to save better now. Still need to try a few, but we’ll see.

Thanks for the input.
I learned a long time ago that when somebody is asking for help, there is no such thing as a dumb question….on either side! 😀 Sometimes the most basic idea was missed.
Yes I am changing the name. I actually asked myself the same question. If I don’t change it there is an error message and I am not getting that. The (*) disappears as if the save had worked. But then it shows in the template list and if I reopen the template itself.
I will try a reinstall. Hopefully that does not lose me my (finally working) templates!

hmmm…well so far I feel that I have provided more info than I have received regarding my question.
no dig at the one who did reply (although some communication regarding my attempts to helpo would be nice)…so yeah a dig. But surely SOMEBODY has some input about this.
