I have managed to remove the “ghosting” from 25p output, rendered from a 50p source. But now I am not that happy with the final result, which still looks a bit choppy, even though a freeze frame is clean.

Can folks download these and see what they think about the choppiness of the progressive version, please? I am pretty happy with the smoothness of the interlaced one, even at the relatively low bit rate.

I have posted up two videos to 4shared.

is an interlaced render from the 1920 1080 50p source from my camera

is a progressive render from exactly the same source and template, with only the progressive setting set differently

Sorry, you have to wait the 20 seconds before dl. The view on 4 shared is not what you see in the actual file.

    I hope…so many settings.

However I have very similar results from other templates, when using same or similar settings.

    My questions are:
    – is the interlaced one smoother than the prog one for other viewers as well as for me?
    – is the progressive render about what I should be expecting regarding smoothness?
    – if not, where should I start looking to get it smoother? This is as good as I have done.
    – if so, is the interlaced one better because it’s effectively showing a sort of “pastiche” (lacing) at 50fps?
    – if the 25p render _is_ about what it should be, and we gradually move toward more digital/computer based stuff and away from interlaced video, are we losing a quality?

Thanks for any help. I feel that I am gradually getting there….wherever that may be! 🙂

You’ll probably find that any 25p (and sometimes even 25i) footage looks a bit choppy on a PC monitor since the monitor typically refreshes at 60Hz which isn’t so good for the 25/50Hz frame rate of PAL type video. You’re effectively getting jitter anytime you play back 25p/25i video. 30fps generally looks smoother on PC monitors since the frame rates match (or are very close).

If you can set your video card to refresh at 75Hz then try that – since it’s a multiple of 25Hz you might find that your 25p footage looks a bit less choppy.

OK. Thanks. Makes sense. I will give that a go. I just hope I can find a monitor that does 75hz. It’s a pity if true, because the main PC-driven TV is also our watch stuff screen and it only does 60hz max. Even so I will try 50Hz

After I posted this, in the interests of research 🙂 I used some raw 25fps footage from my camera. The stuff rendered from a 50hz source was more jittery.I can’t do a direct comparison really. The camera puts out 25i, not 25p 🙁

hmm…tried 50Hz on the TV and it made no discernible difference. The trouble is the more you compress, the more artefacts come into it, but if you don;t compress, you can start to see choppiness caused by simple data rates….or so I have seen.
