I just recently purchased a new dual-core 2.0ghz G5 (yes I was aware of the impending Intel releases, but I’m more than happy with the machine I have now). I know there are obviously no benchmarks yet, but would it stand to reason that a new Intel iMac with dual-core chips might be as fast or faster than the behemoth I just bought and paid almost twice the price for? I certainly wouldn’t regret the unit I just got, however I’m thinking more in to the future, if I were looking to get a secondary machine. Once the pro apps go native in March, might this be the case?

Hi,
I was also looking in to purchasing a Dell monitor. Does anyone have the monitor below? I’m on a fairly strict budget right now, and this seems like a good deal. Although I’d prefer a wide-aspect monitor, that can certainly wait for the future. Right now I have a 6 year old 17″ NEC monitor hooked up to my new G5 and it just looks… sad. 🙂 Any thoughts on this. Is the 20ms time going to cause problems with the display in FCP? Thanks!
Dell UltraSharp 1905FP 19-inch Flat Panel Monitor
$483.53 (this inlcudes tax and shipping and is in Canadian dollars – about $416US) Can anyone recommend a superior product for about the same price? It’ll mostly be used for cutting in FCP. -
Hah, so it looks like an Apple reseller right around the corner from my apartment has the Dual-core 2.0ghz in stock right now. I’d have to settle for the 128meg stock video card, but since it might be 2-3 weeks before the 256 6600 is even available, I’d rather not wait. I’m already late starting on this project…
Is it possible to buy video cards from Apple without having them as part of a custom built system? Or can I buy them from 3rd party retailers?

I just called Apple and the customer service rep told me that he thinks the reason my system was delayed was probably the nVidia Geforce 6600 256mb video card I upgraded to. They offered to ship me a stock system with the 128mb card within 24 hours. The only problem with that is that I require the Airport wireless, which doesn’t come with the stock model. Is there any way to add Airport to a Powermac after it has shipped? I’m guessing that I’d have to install some sort of card, which would take up an available slot? I suppose I could just use a generic USB wireless unit, but I hear those aren’t the greatest. The way my workspace is setup just doesn’t lend itself to using wired internet (the connection is several rooms away). Suggestions?

Excellent, thanks. That’s all the proof I need. =)

Heh, yeah, I didn’t even notice the ECC part in what I posted until well afterwards. It also pays to re-read your own posts. 😉 Thanks for the info though, looks like I made the right choice by default.

Thanks Graham. I take it you’ve ordered from them in the past? I like the fact that they’re only in Victoria (I’m on the mainland). Do they have any sort of guarantee on the RAM they sell?
Thanks!

October 17, 2005 at 11:41 pm in reply to: Capturing DV on a notebook – recommended PCMIA card?I’ll double check both of those. However, I’ve captured dozens of hours of footage to this drive in the past, just not using my notebook (I captured on a desktop PC that had 2 seperate firewire buses). I thought adding a PCMCIA card would essentially mean adding another BUS.

Runs most things I throw at it pretty damn well. I can capture video to the 5400rpm internal drive with no problems at all. It’s only when I use the PCMCIA card that things go wonky.

I do monitor to an NTSC TV through the output on my dv camera. I don’t think that you’d need to daisy chain to do that, would you? It might be the same bus, but there are two ports (one for HD and one for dvcamera). As I understood it, that wouldn’t be a problem would it?
