There are also scripts available online that will convert the mask into a path. The one I have used is available at:

I use this script frequently, though I’m only on CS3, and have never had any problems with it. Should suit your needs well. -
I recommend using the Shape Extruder preset. It is great for making simple 3d; all you need is a vector path. It renders quickly and looks pretty solid. The preset and tutorial are both featured here on the COW as well as on Drozda’s website.
