I have a project I am working on in After Effects CS3. I have an image of a cropped out poker chip it is a Photoshop CS3 file. I animated it so it spins and flips giving the appearance that they are being pitched into the pot, across the composition screen. All I want to do is give the chip a little thickness so it doesn’t look flat when viewed on edge. I have tried to use the tutorial using the shatter effect but every time I start to do it, as soon as I switch the view to rendered the program crashes. What am I doing wrong. Can what I want be done? P.S. It has crashed on my apple macbook and my work p.c. If anyone has any insite into this please help me out.

you could always use the method where you space out a number of duplicate layers close together in z-space. If there is a lot of motion, the motion blur may cover up the fact that it is not a true 3D object.

I recommend using the Shape Extruder preset. It is great for making simple 3d; all you need is a vector path. It renders quickly and looks pretty solid. The preset and tutorial are both featured here on the COW as well as on Drozda’s website.
