Check out free third party effects and generators from these guys (including a gradient generator or two). They are awesome!

There are others. Check the FCPX Techniques board and also https://fcp.co/

I am not affiliated with any of them but have used a number of their effects – all of them generated in Motion 5 and all of them FREE!

I found that on my older MacBook Pro dragging doesn’t work although it works on my Mac Pro. What are your system specs? When you mouse over the text puck the text insertion tool should change to an arrow. On my MBP it doesn’t so I can’t drag. It might be because my system is on the lower end of acceptable specs for FCP X or I may need to re-install or trash prefs. I’m going to give those a try. You might try that as well. Regardless of what the published minimum requirements are for FCP X from my experience you lose a lot of functionality on a “lower end” system. I know this doesn’t really help but maybe it will point you in the right direction.

It sounds like you are confusing which puck is which. If you hit Shift T you will move the whole frame as you have said. However if you exit the transform mode and just select the puck which shows up at the left end of the first line of text you can move it over and your text will no longer be cropped.

Put a placeholder clip on the primary storyline the length of the 6-way segment. Edit the video sources (greenscreen) as connected tracks over the placeholder getting the timing and sync right against the music. Apply the key effect to each source and place the appropriate background under each. You will have to turn layers on and off as necessary to see what you are working on. Once you have the keys all set up make each of your six pairs (foreground/background) a compound clip. At this point you should have six compound clips stacked up over each other full screen with the placeholder clip under them. Apply Simon Usdell’s 6-Way Split Screen effect to the placeholder. Here is the link to that effect:

    https://f1.creativecow.net/2702/fcpx-multipack-split-screen-effects-debugged

Turn off all the compound clips so only the placeholder is visible. Select the placeholder clip. In the inspector you will see the parameters for the split screen effect. Just apply each compound clip to the image wells in the inspector and you are done.

It’s actually a lot easier than it sounds and Simon’s split-screen effect makes the layout of the 6-way split a snap. I use the placeholder clip as a container to keep things tidy.

The main question is why are you getting a gap in the first place. From your description it seems that you are getting an actual gap clip which you would usually get when using the “position” tool. If you use the “select” tool and drag/drop with snapping on you should not get any gaps. In previous versions of FCP I did a lot of drag/drop but I am finding myself using keyboard shortcuts a lot more now.
