Because the FCPX Color Corrector keyer leaves a lot to be desired in terms of sophistication, I thought I’d make a different way of correcting highlights and shadows via an Effect that uses a luma key.

You can affect either the shadows (darker areas) or the highlights (brighter areas) or both with a fair amount of control over how the key/mask works. Useful for balancing out those shots where the detail is getting lost in the highlights or shadows.

(Note this could also be made to work with a chroma keyer with a bit more ingenuity if anyone is interested. I could also incorporate an additional user mask with onscreen controls which could be useful for refining the selected area.)

Here’s a revised version of this effect which fixes an issue with the Highlights section of the filter, and also adds Diffusion controls for both Shadows and Highlights, which makes this an altogether much sexier effect.

    Well, I think so … 😉
