Just ran the AJA system test – I’m getting write speeds of 46.6MB and read speeds of 175MB. Does that sound about right? The graph shows a fairly steady right process with a few huge drops in write speed at certain frames. Sound normal?

Yes, usually shut it down every night. I’ll download the AJA diagnostic and post back…

Thanks for all the responses everyone,

Hmmm, I had no idea that 4gigs was so commonly needed. I’ll chat with I.T. and see what they can get me. The Medea is a SCSI array, does that that raise a flag in anyone’s mind? My timelines don’t have to be very long to become slow to respond. I’ve not been very aware of duplicate frame detection – so I’ll turn that off as well.

February 24, 2006 at 4:09 pm in reply to: How To: Capture at a different codec than the native?

I thought I’d do dvcpro50 only because I know my final release is going to be DVCAM (which obviously is even worse yet). I figured dvcpro50 would be less number-crunching for the G5 than Uncompressed would. Maybe I should just convert to DVCAM upon capture? I was hoping if I editied in the 50 codec and then output to DVCAM, the end result would be cleaner than editing in DVCAM to start with. Now that I’m stating it, it sounds wrong.

I know not the ins and outs of the program of which you speak, but the math does hold up here – at least on one side of it. You say your pixel aspect ratio is 0.917. 0.917 x 350 = (roughly) 323, which is close to the 320 that you’re getting, so perhaps the ratio should be set to one. (Unfortunately the math doesn’t hold up for the 288 side of the equation, so I’m really shooting in the dark here.)

Ok, the cogitation has produced a question… If an NTSC monitor only ever produces 30i images – how does one accurately preview footage on an external monitor when editing in 24p? Is it pulleddown (or “pulled-up”) on the fly? Or… Wait, wait, I think I may have this one… Since it’s 24p, you don’t monitor externally, since your computer monitor is progressive scan already, right? Or wrong?

Alright, thanks guys – this is starting to make a little bit of sense! I’ll read the link and see what else I can find and let my brain cogitate…

Yeah, you’ve got to render the transition. I had the same problem – I didn’t understand all the ins and outs of preview vs. rendered. Do a “full” render on that section. Go to your drop down, “modify”, “render selection”, “full”. Then select the transition (or a little before and a little after it via in and out points on your timeline), “render selection”, and you’re done. Should work – but, might not.

February 1, 2006 at 3:41 pm in reply to: selecting destination in compressor

Lo! It worketh! Yes! You have just saved me much tedious clicking and grumbling in the future.
Just to clarify for any others’ sake: “select all” in the compressor batch window (command-A), then select destination from the drop down menu (don’t try selecting destination in the batch window). Also works for choosing an encode.
Now if you’ll excuse me I have to get busy walking around and saying “Why didn’t I think of that?”

The answers. They’re often so simple.
