MM is no risk as long as you use it properly.
use COPY mode to make a trimmed COPY of your used media in a new project
verify it manualy,
correct any errors (if there are any)
delete the original.

DONT use “Use Existing” mode.
that’s where the risks lie, as you have no opertunity to verify and correct errors.

without the drive plugged in that’s not surprising.
if you are saying you hooked the drive up to another system, and open the project on hte new system,
then it IS surprising.
the drive is there,
the media should be online.

try attaching the drive to your original system, and opening the project there again.
hopefully it will open.
do a save-as,
and then try the second system again.

otherwise you are stuck with the online version,
and re-making the changes.

yes Media Manager works.
you should expect it to work.

that is “doesn’t work” is a myth put about mainly by people who dont use it,
or people who get frightened because they dont understand it;s terminology:
they don’t see the word “consolidate” in there, and freak out.

that it is buggy is also true,
but not to the extent that it wont operate.

there’s only 2 reasons i know of it wont trim:
– no reel#
solution: add reel#s

– it wont let go of master clips
one solution: copy sequence into new project, MM from there.

if it just flat out refuses to work on any project or media, then maybe you should trash your prefs

if i were you i;d make an EDL or Cut List from a small sequence and find out for yourself if all is well.

or any Cinema Tools lists.
i believe this has been fixed in V6,
but i was only told that

the advice to read the manuals was good advise.
the CT manual tells you not to work with subclips in a 24@25 environment.

with rushes in one project and cuts in another you lose the ability to match back to a clip in a bin.

also, if you copy / paste a bin of rushes and a set of sequences from one project to another you will also lose that ability (Master /Affiliate relationship is broken)

the way to split a project is to make a COPY of the project and delete the stuff you dont want.

having said all that, i dont think 65MB is TOO big.

i’d work with that.
i’d start to think about splitting it if it got closer to 90-100MB

not sure i;d believe that.
maybe if you wer to include all keycode and ink numbers,
but i think your;wil work with jsut TC.
not sure.

havent done it myself, but here’s a quick how-to:

copy sequences into new project.
select sequences, tools menu > Create new master clips
all clips used will appear in a bin
open the bin, format the columns, export a batch list,
import that batch list into CT.

think that might do it, but wont promise…

however, i’ll also plug Editrace.
the beauty of that is you can use it as an ON-LINE APP.
and only pay per usage.

upload your old EDL,
upload your new EDL,
get a change list back that talks to ProTools.
