i would have thought that it would be easier to do a cut-down from a COPY of the full sequence.
you have all your edit points there, so it’s easy to jump to them, and mark in / outs around them
plus you can remove transitions at will.

nevertheless, nesting shouldn’t require re-rendering unless there is a sequence miss-match
is your media a different frame size to your sequence?
that could be the issue.

aso how are you making the nests?
edit sequence A into sequence B?
(that could cause re-rendering if you have clip / sequence miss-matches)

try instead: DUPLICATE sequence A,
open that, select all, and Option C to nest selection.

i use ProRes LT, or sometimes ProRes422 for jobs like this.
i havent got bad results like you describe.

but the PAL frame size is 720 x 576
(768 x 576 works with square pixels, but PAL pixels are not square)

maybe you should re-rip with real PAL frame size.
you should be able to reconnect quite painlessly as long as your TC matches,
and make another DVD

The Canopus converts to DV only,
my understanding is that NTSC DV colour space of 4.2.0 makes for not-so-great DVDs

with Intensity shuttle you can capture as Prores, DV, or Uncompressed
but you need Thunderbolt.

either way you may also like to think about some noise reduction.

i was having to do this a lot recently,
so i programmed a macro for it in QuicKeys,
i put a Command 3 on the end to take me back to the timeline.

and if you DO have to do the export. Media Manager would be perfect for this.

select the clip in the timeline, open Media Manager

Copy Media,
trim with some small handles
ask for a new project,
and you get all the new-meda clips in place, ready to copy / paste back into your edit sequence

this would not bake in any FX, but for what you need to do, that is probably best

i believe FCPX lets you edit the footage while it is transcoding in the background.
could be wrong, as i haven’t used it yet.

i’ve never seen anything like that before,
and it seems like you have tried all the usual fixes.

maybe an alternative method for selecting is in order.
try just using in / out points, and auto-select buttons to define which tracks you want.

yes there is a shortcut for slug,

it is Control W, BUT it only works if you have the viewer active.
if other windows are active it does other things.. like close them!

now the QUICKEST way to make the viewer active is to summon up the text generator,
Control X

why is that quickest? because that shortcut will take you to the viewer no matter what window you happen to be in.

so Control X, Control W is surefire fastest way to get some slug into the viewer.

rafael if right, mark in & out points and export.

but if it really is just ONE CLIP it’s even easier:

double click the clip into the viewer.
it will have in/outs plus any fx you may have aded,
plus it will have the clip name as the export name, which may be good for you.
easy enough to change that, of course!
