Is there a keyboard shortcut to add slug into the viewer?
Posted by Abigail Ball on November 19, 2012 at 1:37 pmI’m sure this question has come up here before but I don’t see a thread containing it.
Avid makes it easy to load filler/clear the source monitor. In FCP the two clicks in the viewer drop down monitor to load slug seem a little clunky and I was wondering if there was a keyboard shortcut to do this?

November 19, 2012 at 6:36 pmJust go to the space you want to fill with the slug, and right mouse click: Click on “Fill with Slug”…And there you are.

November 20, 2012 at 7:34 amHi Sascha, unfortunately that’s not the answer I’m looking for. There are times where I’d like to clear the monitor (i.e. I don’t want the client to see footage there) or want to insert slug where there isn’t a space. To reiterate, it’d be convenient to have a hotkey to do this. Sadly, I think the answer is that there isn’t a keyboard shortcut.

November 20, 2012 at 7:37 pmYou didn’t state what version of FCP you are using, but you can pretty much assign any action to a keystroke in the keyboard layout.
Steve.

November 21, 2012 at 7:35 amI’m still using 7.0.3. One of the first things I did was look in the keyboard layout. When I type in “slug” or “viewer” in the search box it doesn’t give me the shortcut I’m looking for. Am I missing it?

November 21, 2012 at 12:05 pmyes there is a shortcut for slug,
it is Control W, BUT it only works if you have the viewer active.
if other windows are active it does other things.. like close them!now the QUICKEST way to make the viewer active is to summon up the text generator,
Control Xwhy is that quickest? because that shortcut will take you to the viewer no matter what window you happen to be in.
so Control X, Control W is surefire fastest way to get some slug into the viewer.

November 22, 2012 at 7:24 amThanks Nick! That’s what I’m looking for. When I read your post something clicked – I think I did know that back in the day (I’ve been on leave for a year and a half and now am having to rediscover some of the shortcuts).
Much appreciated.
