    DOH !!!

Of course….. Boris TV…. My memory is fading drastically as I age…. I need a blood transfusion from a 5 yr old child that matches my group of course…. some interesting research has led clever people to discover that stem cells in young blood will re-connect broken neurons and forge new neural pathways in those of us who are in a degenerative state thru age…… It’s as if the old legend of Count Dracula could have an element of truth behind it…. !!!

Anyway…. thanks for the pointer John… I’ll watch that again right away.

    cheers

  • [Aaron Star] “I think that some view the world from one point of view, and others completely different”

Absolutely…. When it comes to the complexities of how specific computer hardware components actually operate within the many variables that exist when combined in different systems, it’s more than just opinion that matters because opinion is not often quantified with the necessary knowledge base for it to contain the truisms in which conclusions can be ideally drawn.

Thanks for coming on and giving me the benefit of your knowledge on the subject.

I’m sure I read in one of your other posts that you use dual GPU’s…? If I did can you expand on the way you set them to benefit the performance of SVP.

  • [John Rofrano] “Yes they have and that’s one of the big reason’s I moved to the Mac.”

I’m off to my local Apple store to have a guided tour of FCP X…. I think it has to be worth a look and with the money I’m now looking at spending on a portable workstation I can get a really nice Mac Book pro… so lets go and see how easy it is to use with it’s magnetic timeline… I just watched some of the stuff from the Apple website and I like what I see.

  • [Dave Osbun] “Every single post is asking about GPU. Let’s move on….”

Let’s move on…?????… is there a schedule we’re following I wasn’t aware of…?… and just to clarify every recent post by me over the past few days is asking a different question in relation to graphics processing and how SVP utilises it… let’s be precise.

Every question I’ve asked here has had a wealth of experience based information come in the form of constructive answers and I am thoroughly appreciating those people who take the time to reply. Answers to questions inevitably bring more questions because answers are generally not finite, especially when there are so many variables involved.

Unfortunately… your reply in this instance gives the impression you aren’t interested in this subject… but that is not a problem because others are happy to share their knowledge.

If any given subject doesn’t float your boat and you don’t have anything constructive to say on the topic, it’s really simple to avoid saying anything and ‘move yourself on’ to choose something that appeals to you to pass on your thoughts as constructively as possible. That’s what open forums are all about… you can choose what subject you want to discuss (within the realms of relativity obviously)… or not as the case may be. If you don’t like what I ask then avoid that question… I promise you I won’t lose any sleep whatsoever or think any less of you.

    Have a great day.

  • Thanks… I’ll test that combination of resources… then I envisage the interpretation of data involves a whole new skillset

  • [John Rofrano] “What does Vegas Pro lack for consumers? (wait you already said that you don’t know what they are). So if you don’t know what’s missing then how do you know that Vegas Pro doesn’t already have it? ;-)”

Good point John…. yes I shouldn’t really assume that there are things which could improve Vegas if I don’t know what they are… lol… but my assumption is based on reading how Vegas might run more optimally if it were re-written to match the pace of hardware development and the multi-core environment

So I have to wonder if there is a good case for some clever people to design an ideal NLE that uses ALL the feedback from video editors globally to write a program that the end user wants rather than trying to guess what they might like and then set about not just designing a new NLE but also the perfect machine to run it on.

So instead of trying endless combinations of hardware configs to get the best performance from the software, there is a union of software and hardware…. Of course Apple have already done that… (so I’m told) 🙂

  • [Sorin Nicu] “You can use GPU-Z utility to monitor the GPU usage in real time.”

Excellent… CPU-Z also..? so side by side you can then perform any Vegas task and see exactly what is working.

This of course will produce data and I assume that can be diagnosed by someone with the right skills) to work out how improvements can be made…?

  • [Stephen Mann] “Nick, asking for opinions about Editing Software is like asking about religion. Guess which church you’re in right now?”

That may be the case Stephen, though everything I see is through my staunch atheist/Darwinian eyes and although some would try to argue that this view of life can also be defined as a religion, that’s a whole different debate…. but I’ve gained a valuable insight already so keep it coming guys.

I asked the question for several reasons and one motivation to learn as much as possible is because I’m trying to decide on the portable rig I’m about to configure. Asking those who make their living from editing video is a sure way to get a good understanding of what people use and why they choose to use it.

The question formed after a bit of searching and discovered that Adobe and Nvidia have seemingly teamed up to produce what seems on the surface like a very fast GPU acceleration as 4k resolution becomes commonplace.

    https://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe-premiere-pro-cc.html

However, as I’ve learnt, Adobe premiere is a NLE for rent and although it may work for big companies who do stuff on a large scale with loads of money in a pot, it’s easily understandable that independent’s wouldn’t see any viability in renting their tools… so… if you want to choose to remain on this side of the Apple empire, the only real cost effective solution for those who earn a living shooting/editing video is Sony Vegas Pro (hope that’s a good summary)

Hmmmm…. do I sense room in the marketplace for a new NLE that is sold on exactly the same basis as SVP, slightly cheaper for that competitive edge, but takes on board all the things that SVP lacks (I have no idea what they are) and is in direct competition with….. ???

[Kell Hymer] “Let us know what they tell ya…..”

For sure… Actually having now spent 24 hrs on the Eurocom site running thru the massive choice of kit they offer and scouring the net for any reviews I can find, I think the P7 is the one I’d like to configure as it has the slightly larger 17.3″ panel although a 4K screen is a choice with the 15.6″ P5…. certainly loads of choice and that really stands out over and above the other laptop custom builders I’ve seen so far. Of course on the downside for me would be the extra cost of getting a rig from the States to the UK, but it’s not so much as to put me off.

The first reply I managed to get within 15 minutes of my original email (tick) confirmed that they will have the SM971 available for this laptop at the end of March AND are about to add the R9 M290X to the list of GPU choices in this model. In my experience, companies keep people interested by providing ‘unrealistic release dates’, but end of March is only weeks away, so lets see what happens.

I’ll have the opportunity over the next couple of weeks to do more research on the company themselves and see what comes up while I’m waiting for that date to arrive and one thing I want to establish is whether the current P7 model can be reconfigured to allow a PCI-e 3.0 interface as this is how the 2Gbps speed of the new SM971 is attained.

PCI-e 2.0 still works but not full throttle and I’d want it all…. 🙂

Kell… I see yr rig has the R9 290X… did you build the rig to use with Vegas …?
