Since we are talking rumors. I don’t think nvidia is going anywhere. I think we are just in a middle period between cards.

What yields better performance the 285 or the 4800?

The gfx card swap is interesting. I thought the GTX series are currently faster than the 4800. I guess nvidia is not going to give us a mac version of the GTX480 any time soon. 🙁
The 4800 only has 192 cuda cores, but the GTX 480 has 480 cores. So my guess is the only reason the 4800 is being used is because it’s the last nvidia solution for a mac?

IF you dont want to waste money, wait till its out. At that time you will have a list of whats official from blackmagic.
At most it will be a week delay, if the spec are out on a monday, you can order everything and have it friday. Otherwise your taking a gamble as to what will officially work.

[walter biscardi] “[Mark Suszko] “I think the trend over the next few years is a repeat of the boutique post movement of the late 80’s/early 90’s. Small, purpose-built, niche operations designed to run hyper-lean, with most non-essentials rented on demand or leased, populated by a small staffing core, bolstered on a per-job basis by hungry freelancers.” “
This is how i built my company, Its a two person operation and as i need more people I hire them freelance. I pay them good wages and they always want to return. The company was built on cash, we only buy things cash or if a job requires it and will pay for it.
2010 is a tough year. This years revenue will be a little more than half of the years before. I’m mostly feature based, and we are feeling the effects of writers/actors strikes of years before. And the effects of this economy. If I had actual over head, I’d be out of biz. The only overheard we have is Rent and in L.A. it’s much cheaper to rent than buy. I’m sure atlanta is a different beast.
Everyone has different challenges for the niche they are in, as well as the market they are in. I hope we all are here in 2014, making money, enjoying life.
Kudos to Walter! You will never have to ask “What if”. Thats the way life is meant to be lived. No one every got anywhere by playing it safe all the time!

[Jamie Allan] “You can easily spec a system for pricing though, the main components that are required at this stage are – GTX285 or FX4800 GFX cards, BMD Extreme 3D IO cards”
I thought that you could use any Decklink extreme card. It did not have to be the new 3d card?

[Todd Jaspers] ”
I am interested in doing something like Nick Hasson. Do I have to be an official Creative Cow writer to get the inside scoop on how this setup works? “Well you have the same setup I do. I have the two machines connected peer to peer over the 10g link. I use AFP and get 350MB read and write across this link. With 2048×1024 the link always give me realtime. With 2048×1556 I get realtime most of the time. It will stutter some times. But I just use color on one machine, render out dpx frames and pull those into the smoke. Most of the realtime needs are handled on the smoke.
As you know apple color is not realtime, so even with the bandwidth, you still will not get realitme anything with apple color.

[Bob Zelin] ” can tell you that we have setup a 10Gig ethernet shared storage enviornment between MACs ONLY for Creative Cow’s Nick Hasson – we are using Small Tree 10Gig ethernet cards, and he is moving 2K uncompessed DPX files between a couple of MAC’s, with NO SAN SOFTWARE. We also demonstrated this exact setup at NAB2010.
Is it “even possible” – why yes, it works fine. I have not personally tried using Thursby DAVE software to connect to a PC as Matt suggests, but this is the exact software that EditShare uses when you buy their system.
“Yes this setup works great. I have a smoke on one mac that does all of our editing on one mac pro, and apple color on the other. There is a small tree 10G ethernet link between the two computers. The smoke has the storage attached to it. When we color, its across the 2k link. We render and qc from the computer with no storage, everything is over a nas.

I went very low tech. I looked Into all the great things that people suggested. In the end I did not spend as much as I thought. I bought a drobo pro and 8 2TB drives. This was about 3k for the drives and drobo. As for backup software, I decieded to go low tech as well. I use the rsync command line tool to every ignt sync my raid to the drobo. This works great for me. I’m a one person shop, so I did not need anything crazy. All the macs I have get there system drives backup up by time machine to another drive.
Low tech and maybe cheap. But it works for now. One day I’ll upgrade to something fancy.
