  • [Andy Field] “Actually there are quite a few reasons. I’m consulting with a large federal agency that has over 500 seats of FCP 7 and 6. It integrates with their Dalet server and they broadcast programs around the world. Some are still on FCP 6…some are still cutting SD DV material……”

I can understand this, it’s such a large workforce that any change is going to be painful. The rant was inspired by the hundreds of people I’ve encountered that have to freedom to switch to another NLE, but stick with 7 because they know it well and aren’t will to learn a new system. It’s like an editing purgatory, where every passing day they stay with 7 is another day they could have gotten better at Media Composer, Premiere, or X. Not everyone using 7 is averse to change, but I think it’s a very strong majority, especially with independent editors and small companies that have the flexibility to change.

  • I didn’t mean to dog on Adobe, it’s just that most of the people I see switching from FCP7 to Premiere do it because of how similar it is to 7. My biggest point of the rant is that unless you have a very specific reason to stay FCP7, you are better off by going with any of the 3 modern systems.

What about that 4k Seiko? 1.5K is cheaper than any Flanders screen (although way less accurate.)

  • Select the “Retime” menu between the Enhancement Menu and Filters Menu and choose “Conform Speed”. So much easier than the old Cinema Tools trick.

I’m pretty sure this forum says “Apple Final Cut Pro” which last time I checked was at version 10.0.8 not 7.0.3. As somebody that’s worked about 40 hours a week in FCP since 2006, it’s a bit maddening to see so little respect for a program that’s come such a long way. Sure, I was pissed after the release, but by 10.0.3 everything was either back in or had a decent workaround. Yes, you have to learn something new, but the general consensus I’ve found is that aside from a few learning/growing pains, the new way is faster, more efficient, and less prone to preference deleting / library trashing / 12 hour render / hair pulling madness.

I’m sorry Shane, this isn’t directed at you, it’s a general issue with the post industries’ aversion to change. The new FCP is doing what FCP has always done, it’s making the establishment guys uncomfortable. It’s doing now to Legacy/Premiere guys what it did ten years 13 years ago to Avid guys. It’s once again making people say, “Well then why the hell did I pay 10 times more for this?”

Rant over, no hard feelings. Can we please have a Final Cut Pro Legacy forum now, so that the living software can take it’s rightful, and hard earned place?

  • Move to X, it’s worth it in the long run. If going to tape is your issue, grab Resolve Light. It’s free, prints to tape, and kicks the crap out of Color. If you need CC, well… I’m waiting on that one too. The best workaround for CC seems to be FCP7, but by that point you’ll be dealing with a flat file, so no RAM worries.

  • If you have to use Legacy than the Log & Transfer method is the way to go for sure. If you’re on FCPX just click “Optimize Media” when you import. Having spent the last year and a half over on X, I’d highly recommend upgrading if you haven’t already. With just a weekend or so of training you’ll be much faster than could be possible within FCP7, especially on a doc style program.

  • I think this proves it isn’t ready. A card that expensive isn’t really worth much when it only runs at 1/4 speed.

  • You’ll do fine. It’s actually an incredibly intuitive, fast, and powerful interface. The problems tend to arise when people just dive in head first thinking that they know it. There will be a lot of times where you will go “Well how would I do this, or that?”, and for that you’ve got us here at The Cow.

  • There really aren’t any limitations. Since 10.0.3 X has done pretty much everything Premiere does (and more). I have PPro, MC, FCP7 & X, and am proficient with each, but find that I’m significantly faster and less stressed with X. At $999 I’d recommend Media Composer over Premiere as well. Really it comes down to preference / dealing with quirks at this point.

Well I’m leaving AE for Nuke, but I’m in school so I can still get their killer student pricing. I also prefer Motion for Mograph because of its real time playback and adjustments.
