If the telecine was done without flex/log files, then that will give you trouble no matter if you use FCP-CT or Avid FC.

In any case, if you’re doing DI and don’t expect to conform the neg at all, then you don’t even need keycodes, just TC and EDLs will do. I’ve managed frame accurate cut lists and EDLs for a full length feature shot in 35mm 3-perf, 4-perf, as well as 16mm. With FCP 5.0.4, and on an IMac. So have no fear. It all works.

Still waiting to load this up and try. But meanwhile, what kind of RT performance are people seeing with M-JPEG?

And as an aside, M-JPEG imports and exports really fast on Avid systems too. Not as fast as Avid codec files, but next best.

I even wrote to Blackmagic and they have said they are looking into this.

My current workarounds are…
Convert the DV-PAL 24@25 stuff to PhotoJPEG or uncompressed 8bit if you have space/throughput.
OR
Another way to get rid of this is to go to the SafeRT pop up to the left of the timeline window and set the Record to tape settings to “Use playback settings” not “Full Quality”

Just one small probably glaringly obvious thing. Are your Firewire drives formatted as MacOSX Journaled? Have you double checked?
I had a similar problem and although I always format my drives MacOSX, one drive was funky. A double-check showed it to be MS-DOS. I could swear I had formatted it. It turned out a client I had sent it to, copied stuff off it, re-formatted it MS-DOS, then copied stuff back. So I didn’t notice.

Now I always double-check.

As an aside, and probably not an immediate solution would be to consider the software-only version of AvidMC on Mac with a MojoSDI for I/O. On the same box you can even run FCP and maybe put in a cheap card for I/O or Multibridge Extreme for HD uncompressed as well as higher.

And if you wait a bit and get the new MacPro, you can even have a Windows partition and boot to WinXP and run Liquid or Chrome or even Vegas. All are software and not too costly at that so you can really have the best of all worlds.

I could be wrong, but doesn’t the new MojoSDI when used with MC software allow you to capture from HD and use the DNxHD codecs to store?

You should look at the new MojoSDI. Avid XPRess or the new Media Composer will not support any video I/O hardware like a capture card except Mojo AFAIK. I haven’t come across anyone who uses Avid software (any) with any capture card.

That 24@25 flicker we are used to.

Can you please check what you see when you place a 24 fps clip DV in a 24 fps DV timeline and play it out through your BM card output?
And then repeat the same in Edit to tape or Print to Video mode?

OK I seem to have got a handle on this one…

The system a G5 Dual 2.5, BM HDPro Single Link. OSX 10.4.6, BM 5.6, QT 7.1.1 FCP 5.0.4.

I just installed OSX 10.4.6 combo, then QT 7.1.1, Pro apps update 2006-01, then BM 5.6 last. FCP prefs were trashed and permissions repaired. All disks were checked with Disk Utility.

Playback settings set to 24@25 repeat.

Placed a DV-PAL 24fps clip in a DV-PAL 24@25 seq.
Easy setup as Blackmagic PAL – DV 24@25 (created). Normal sequence playback shows the slight once-per-second judder. Edit to tape and Print to video show major judder like a field inversion.

So its just when playing a 24 fps DV clip through the BM SDI output and during ETT or PTV that one sees the problem. Normal playback is normal. Using the canned Blackmagic PAL-DV or the Blackmagic 8bit easy setups don’t make a difference.

Only someone who’s doing a film 24 fps project in a PAL environment and using a BM card to output to Beta/DigiBeta under Edit to tape or Print to Video will see this.

Anyone notice this?

I think you’re still using FCP 4 or 4.5 (your profile lists a Cinewave). FCP 5 and now 5.1 have made some improvements in this media management behaviour. And I’m happy to report that recentrly I had to reconnect a Film 24@25 project (in PAL land) and it linked OK. I’d done it before with disastrous results. Seems to have been fixed.
