For best quality you’ll have to experiment with Compressor settings. Try it out with a 1 min segment with different settings. You’ll find one that works best.

  • If you need a NTSC DVD as 16:9, set your timeline to NTSC Anamorphic – ProRes or DV or even DV50. That way, whatever is not NTSC 16:9 will have to be scaled to fit 16:9. Maybe even needing render. But at least in the end you’ll have a consistent format.

If you need a NTSC DVD as 4:3, set your timeline to NTSC – ProRes or DV or even DV50.

Use the final sequence to export to iDVD for making a DVD.

There may be video breaks in your tape. And probably your user prefs are set to ignore TC breaks.

What deck are you using? And are you connected to the deck over Firewire? Or through a card like Blackmagic or Kona?

The format can’t be DVCPro50 1080i60. DVCPro50 is SD. The format could be DVCProHD 1080i60. Maybe there’s a mismatch between the deck settings and FCP input settings.
Or maybe there’s video breaks in what you’re capturing. Another cause of audio sync.

And, maybe the clips were logged with a certain number of audio tracks and your capture preset or sapture settings are capturing less or more tracks.

If you capture afresh, not batch capture a sequence but log and capture, does FCP make a file that’s fine?

And finally, is your capture disk a local and MacOS Extended drive? Not NTFS or FAT32 or a network drive? Double check this.

  • I think you should convert all the footage to 16:9 HD ProRes. And edit it as 16:9 HD ProRes. After the edit, your should convert the edited material to 4:3 centre crop. That way you have a 16:9 master should you need it.

August 21, 2009 at 3:27 pm in reply to: subtitles…

For global position or scaling/distort changes in subtitles across a timeline all you need is to change one title and then copy and paste attributes on all other titles.

If you want to change font type – like from Helvetica to Times for instance – you will need a Title Exchange Pro. It is money well spent, I can assure you. I have one and I do a lot of subtitling.

If this is a one-off, then you could do an XML export of the subtitle layer and then edit that XML with a search and replace in TextEdit. That way you can change anything.

August 21, 2009 at 3:22 pm in reply to: Pro Res with 25p material can it be done?

Yes there’s no 25p monitoring setting on Blackmagic or Kona cards.

This is how I’ve understood this…

50i works fine for 25p. The field order is of no real consequence as there are no time shifted fields going from 25p to 50i. The frame is divided into two fields. Actually cards like Kona or BM don’t actually play back at 25 progressive. Because monitors can’t actually show 25 frames in a second. So these cards actually output psf. Which, to the monitor appears to be the same as 50i.

  • The Pipeline boxes – both of them – take SD-SDI or HD-SDI, compress and encode them to either of DNxHD, DVCProHD, ProRes, and some other formats, and send them over Gigabit to clients which have their software. You cannot use them to capture uncompressed anything.

So if that’s your requirements, you can’t use Pipeline.

But the quality of their encodes is really good, and working at ProRes or DVCProHD, means you don’t need anything more than single SATA drives for capture. Actually your need can be fulfilled with iMacs too if you go the Pipeline route.

If you have to do uncompressed, you need some custom built solution. For that, Bouke is your man.

You can also consider VirtualVTR or PictureReady from Gallery. I’m not sure about the automation, but these also do uncompressed capture.
