  • Can we also have a similar thing on the ‘Basics forum’ which allows a not-so-basic question to be moved to the FCP forum?

What is the resolution of the sequence?

If its HD and 24p, then the BM card should play it fine out of the HD-SDI output.

November 30, 2009 at 2:31 pm in reply to: Simple Archiving to Blu-Ray?

If LTO is a choice, BRU has their excellent software and LTO drives as bundles here…

    https://www.tolisgroup.com/products/bundles.html
    and
    https://www.productionbackup.com/info/bundles.html

LTOs are remarkable sturdy, need no power, don’t crash and cost under $40 for 800 GB backup. A Bru bundle costs about $ 4500.

If that’s too expensive, and your data set is smaller, like Red media, XDCamEx SxS, P2, or HDSLR video, then Blu-ray is a viable choice. You can do a 1 card to 1 disk backup for easy organization.

When larger optical disks are available, and there are indications that even 1 Tb disks may be available in some years, you can easily migrate your Blu-ray disks to these new large disks. Just like how you can read an old set of CD-Rs backed up even ten or more years ago. And migrate them to DVD-Rs or Blu-rays now.

If you are planning on investing in a LaCie, bear in mind two factors…

    1. LaCie RAID drives are notoriously unreliable and prone to failure. In the event of failure, it is near impossible to rescue any meaningful amount of data from a RAID.
    2. laCie support is a bit spotty in some countries. In places they don’t even have a telephone support or a policy of responding to support issues.

So beware. I’d prefer Western Digital.

Or, if you need to examine fields, you could put the shift fields filter and toggle upper or lower to see each field.

November 7, 2009 at 6:46 am in reply to: capturing audio

Can you capture or see the incoming video or audio in the capture window?
Is the ADVC set to be in analog to digital mode? You need to press the silver switch so the analog in light is on.
Is the camera that’s feeding video, on and feeding video? And is that video of the same standard that the ADVC is set to? Meaning is the camera NTSC and Canopus set to NTSC, or PAL and PAL.

And in FCP your easy setup also has to be the same NTSC or PAL.

Finally, the AFVC needs to be set to 48 kHz_16bit.

The NTSC, PAL, and audio 48kHz can be set on the ADVC using DIP switches. Pg 17 of the manual describes it.

November 7, 2009 at 6:37 am in reply to: Best backup system?

While LTO-3/4 tape is more secure than hard disks, you need to know that LTO tapes can be written in many different and often incompatible formats. What I shudder to think is that one may delect a format that may become invalid in a few years, so even if one had a drive, the software to read it may or may not exist.

That’s not the case with hard disks and DVD-Rs or BD-Rs.

I’ve begun to suggest clients Blu-ray BD-Rs to back up SxS or P2 or CF card data from Sony XDCam Ex, Red, Canon 7D shoots. Its neat, one card one disk. As many disks as there are card changes, so the risk of a unreadable disk means only minimal loss of data. Besides, BD-R disks seem to be hardier than some noname DVD-Rs or CD-Rs. And they are cheaper than LTO tapes.

If your media is SD ProRes, 1 BD-R could even hold an hour of video or half an hour od HD video.

One day (probably 2-3 years hence) there will be a 1 Tb optical disk, and that drive will still be backward compatible with today’s disks. Just as I can still read system backups on CD-Rs written in 1993.

November 6, 2009 at 5:11 am in reply to: Uncompressed 10-Bit Gamma Shift

Shake is not part of FCS and if you don’t have it you can’t buy it any more.

The Resolve facility will need to linearize for you with their LUT so they can confirm it with their calibrated monitors.

If they cannot/do not, and you don’t have shake, I will need to check if Color can do the log-lin conversion on a Quicktime that’s in log space. Incidentally, color can definitely do log-lin and rather good conversion, but on DPX or Cineon files.

Another utility that does a good log-lin and even provides controls for tweaking this, is Pomfort Cinemator.

The conversion from Resolve uncompressed Quicktime to Apple ProRes will be handled by compressor, or Color.

November 5, 2009 at 2:35 pm in reply to: Uncompressed 10-Bit Gamma Shift

We output from a DaVinci Resolve as Uncompressed Quicktime. These are large movies and not like the Uncompressed 10-bit movies that FCP and Quicktime.

In Quicktime player, the movie properties look like this…
    screenshot2009-11-05at7.58.37pm.png

By default, this is a ‘log’ quicktime which needs to be linearized. We usually do it in Shake with the Truelight node set for the correct film stock.

Or else it can also be linearized by the post facility. In that case the colours will be correct. We make these kind of quicktimes and then convert them to ProRes in an FCP system. We’ve seen no significant shifts in gamma or colour.
