An LTO-6 tape is capable of holding 2.5 TB, but Bru PE can write about 2.2 TB and not more. That’s because there’s an overhead for redundancy. This amount is variable depending on the number of files and their size.

So, for instance, if I’m backing up Red raw files, I get to cram a bit more per tape than if I were backing up Arri raw. Because of the way these media is laid out. a 30sec clip in Red Raw is 5-6 files. The same clip in Arri raw is 720 odd files.
But 7.5 TB worth of data no matter what the content, is not going to fit in 3 LTO-6 tapes whether you use Bru PE or any other software.

I would advice making an archive of all 7.5 TB at one go, and let Bru make a set of 4 tapes. But if you must do the sorting yourself, I recommend making folders of 2.00 TB or less, and letting the data spread over 4 tapes.

BM’s web site still shows Fusion 9 Studio as a product. Priced at $299.

On the Support page Fusion 9.0.2 Studio and Fusion 9.0.2 are still there, so, they don’t seem to have discontinued it. Whether it will be upgraded or not remains to be seen.

I actually checked out prices for the components mentioned

Intel i9 7960x 32 cores @ 4.3GHz
Thermaltake Floe Riing 360mm Water Cooler
Asus x299 Prime Deluxe
64GB 3333 Corsair Dominator ram
2 EVGA 1080ti Cards @ 16 lanes each

I couldn’t find an i9 32 core @4.3 GHz, what I could find is an i9 7960x 2.8 GHz 16-core which goes up to 4.2 GHz with 32 threads. Need a link to this one ’32 cores @ 4.3GHz’.

I added the exact same other components as mentioned RAM, 2x GPUs. And I added a 5k display, 2x 1 TB m.2 SSD, Case, keyboard and mouse, Win10 Pro USB.
The total adds up to $ 8,300. Did I miss anything? Add it to the price, then.

This, for a machine that may be superior to the iMac Pro, but at a not significantly lower price.
And I haven’t even accounted for the labour in putting this thing together. Which if we value our time as editors at $500 per day, and take, say, 4 days to set this system up fully, the price of this wonderfully powerful Windows computer is $ 10,300.

An 18-core iMacPro with 64 GB RAM and 16 GB GPU would run $ 8,800. And a 14-core would be $ 8,000.

On upgradeability, in 3 years, the CPU, RAM may change to the point that the then current CPU and RAM will not work with this motherboard. GPUs will evolve, and the GPU of 2021 may or may not be compatible with this motherboard.

And along the way, if any component in the self-built PC fails outside the warranty period, you simply have to buy a new one. RAM, SSD, GPU are all very costly components to replace. So add maybe $ 500 for replacements over 3 years.

For the iMacPro, $169 gets you AppleCare which gives you parts and labour replacement free for 3 years.

For all the trouble (and expense) of building your own PC, the speed increase you’ll see will likely be in the import and render process, both of which are processor and GPU dependent. I can’t think of any activity where this PC will finish in 6 hours and the iMacPro will take 2 days.

The speed of editing, grading, mixing, designing, writing…
Those depends on the processor which sits between the keyboard and the chair.
That one is ‘factory fitted’ and non-upgradeable.

Just for clarity.

Your MacBook Pro is running 10.13.4. Are your iMac5k and Mac Pro 2008 running 10.13.4 too?
The changes in numb.conf, sysctl.conf and the DSStore disable needs to be done on all systems?

Have you tried with one or more systems running 10.12.x on the same QNAP? Not that I’m suggesting a rollback of OS, was just wondering of this is a 10.13.x thing.

No Bob, 3 GB, 9 GB, 18 GB was the norm in the Avid in the nineties. Gigabytes.

The first Avid I saw in 1992 had one 2 Gigabyte drive. The first Avid I regularly edited on, in 1996 had two 9 Gigabyte drives totalling 18 Gigabytes. Yes Gigabytes. My phone has 4 times that much space.

You’re saying 3 ‘TB’ and 9 ‘TB’. Terabytes.
Avid got into the Terabytes only by the 2010s.

Maybe you should get something like DiskWarrior and repair the directory. I’ve seen many an old drive work fine after DW has had a go at it.

While I don’t have any direct experience with the TVS-1282T3 unit, I’ve seen some older Qnap T2 units in operation.

In general, it seems that these Qnap NAS boxes work best over network connections like GigE or 10GigE. I understand that since you’ve spent some extra getting a T3 device, you would like it to work over T3. But the Qnap TVS-1282T3 is not like any other T3 RAID like the one from Areca or G-Tech which are pure RAID boxes. Those work great over T2 or T3.

The Qnap, implements a T3 connection like a network connection and that’s where it isn’t very good. That has something to do with how the Mac implements network (SMB) over Thunderbolt (2 or 3). You may, with a bit of tinkering and support, eventually make it work over T3 but that is likely to not be as stable as a 10GigE or even a GigE connection.

So, I’m with Bob as far as simply connecting a 10GigE adapter and getting on with it.

I too am in a country where buying these boxes and returning them is not an easy option, so I know what that feels like.

I have used HH drives to backup many petabytes of data to LTO-6 tapes. And, have worked on FH drives only occasionally. But I haven’t seen any difference in backup speed between either.
One whole LTO-6 tape takes about 4 hrs to write and 2 to verify. It goes down to 6 write and 3 verify if the source drives are slow. Or if you are backing up a large number of small files.

If the footage is from Canon 6D and other DSLRs, then the Reel Info or Tape info column will likely be blank.
Was the footage originally imported into Avid directly for editing, or converted to DNxHD and then taken into Avid?

Mixed frame rate AAFs are a bit dodgy particularly if there’s no Reel info and there are TC and/or filename repeats.
