Yeah I guess that might be taxing on your System/GPU – I tried putting 6 random Sapphire FX on a few HD clips – while it was a little like trying to wade through treacle I didnt get crashes and that was on a fairly old Macpro with an Nvidia 2800 GTS and a Kona 3
If you tell me the fx you are using in what order I could try them and see what happens just for the hell of it.

Ah I didnt realise you had SD footage too that kind of changes things as you dont want to upres that to HD only to downres it again – that would just add to your work and have to worry about getting frame sizes right though several changes of SD/HD/SD
I think I would take a view – if you have say 90% HD and just a bit of SD then you could do what I suggest and then replace the SD shots once you go to the SD sequence so they are not pushed and pulled all over the place.
However if you have 50/50 between what you shoot and what you already have then shooting 4×3 is looking more attractive.
I guess it would mean that the shots the other guy messed with wont look quite so bad compared to what you shoot when his shots are next to your pristine HD footage 🙂

I assume the bottleneck in your plan is not FTP or not – it must be the bandwidth limit of the ISP’s that you use would be the limiting factor ?
You are constrained by your suppliers upload speed and your download whatever system of transfer lies between.
Moving around full HD files over the net is not easy for most projects unless you are all on 40/50 gig plus fibre networks its going to get slow I would have thought.Be interested to see what other think/do

Have to say Sapphire are my favourite plug ins.
There is a free fully working trial of Sapphire – I think it lasts 2 weeks you could use that for your shot – you can also rent them on a month by month basis so they can be a little more affordable.
I dont think animatte will help you directly but maybe some of the warp shapes will. Perhaps the ball shape one might distort correctly for you ?

Could you explain a little more about your post production process how did you edit ? grade? which codec ?
What type of file and at what size / codec did you use for the projection ?best wishes

If the machines are on the same network you can tell if 2 have duplicate serial numbers as you will get a mesage on boot up of FCP that another machine is already using that serial number.
Other than that its a case of looking at splash screens and checking I think.
The related files are stored as “Final Cut Studio System ID” here:
/library/application support/Pro Apps
and also here
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.RegFinalCutStudio.plist.
but not sure they will help you too much in looking as they are not formatted to be easily readable.

It does sound odd that the disks are not original. Why would he only have copies of them ?
I would be cautious about what I was buying.
Apple do allow you to transfer the license but it should include the original disks.

You may, however, make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your license rights to the Apple Software to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include all of the Apple Software, including all its component parts, original media, printed materials and this License; (b) you do not retain any copies of the Apple Software, full or partial, including copies stored on a computer or other storage device; and (c) the party receiving the Apple Software reads and agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this License. All components of the Apple Software are provided as part of a bundle and may not be separated from the bundle and distributed as standalone applications.
So strictly its not allowed and obviously is your risk.
Maybe ask him to send you a photo of the license – he should obviously cover up the serial number but it should tell you that its real or not and a full version.
If he has a genuine license and a valid reason for the disks then just maybe its OK – if he just has the numbers written down then walk away for sure.
I bought a copy of FCP from a guy overseas – I just needed the license and he took a photo for me of everything. I could see it was genuine so I asked him to just post me the license and throw away the disks.
It was in the days when you got a huge box and manuals etc that I didnt need anyway and didnt want to pay to ship. It was all legit and I registered the software without issue.Follow your instincts though – if its too good to be true then it probably is wrong.

You dont have to letterbox to get HD to SD. You can use centre cut out.
So in effect you lose the right hand and left hand sides of the shot.You would have to shoot to take this into account or use a bit of pan and scan in your edit. Remember dont stretch the pics upwards – zoom in equally once you drop a shot into an SD sequence – which will letterbox by default.
I would probably do this:
Since you are shooting it all in HD you can just edit it in an HD sequence, ProRes like you usually would. When you have picture lock drop it into an SD 720×486 sequence set up as 8bit uncompressed as required and then adjust the shots to fit full frame as you require and render out just your final sequence.

I use Sapphire quite a bit and generally dont have any crashing issues but dont often use more than maybe 3 or 4 effects per shot max.
Which Sapphire version are you using and which effects are you applying to what type of media ?
There is a Sapphire forum they are a pretty helpful bunch
