Any 32 bit App is limited to the amount of RAM it can use, so I would guess that applies to Compressor as well.Always store media, especially HD video media on a fast external drive (or separate internal). Your OS internal one is not quick enough and its running the OS etc at the same time.

September 24, 2012 at 10:49 pm in reply to: FCP7 crashes trying to ‘log and transfer’ 6 hour take of AVCHD footageWhilst more Ram is going to generally help your machine sadly FCP7 cannot utilise any more than 4GB Ram (32bit and all that). So you wont see a gain in FCP7 speed by adding any more.
As Mark says using your internal drive for media is a no no.
You need a minimum of a firewire 800 connection for your external drive 7200RPM drive speed.best wishes

Video I/O devices are needed if you want to properly monitor video and audio signals. Whilst your computer offers some connectivity it does not have everything you need to do this.
The T Tap offers a very simple Thunderbolt to HDMI and SDI output which both carry embedded audio signals.
Professional video monitors will accept the SDI output or you could use the HDMI output on say a Plasma monitor. So that would give you video monitoring options.
To get the audio you would need an additional box like this
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/miniconverters/You would need the SDI to analogue version. That would give you balanced audio monitoring sync with the video.
Obviously there are other options where everything is in one box like the Aja IO XT or the IO Express.
In terms of input since you use file based cameras the I/O does not play a role and is not required. You are not inputting a video signal as such so it would not change your workflow in terms of getting stuff in.
However if you had a requirement to input from a deck or other video source then you would need and I/O

H264 is not an editing format that FCP likes. You really should be using ProRes or something compatible or you could end up having any number of issues. I quick search here for FCP7 H264 editing will reveal a world of pain.

Yes I had not noticed the frame rate difference in the question.. I work in PAL land, it’s so much easier. There seem to be endless frame rate issues that you NTSC guys have to deal with all the time.

Once you have set up a sequence that you know matches your source material, cut and paste the old incorrect sequence into the new one. (Sounds like you got this far)
Select all of the cips in the new sequence that are incorrectly sized. Right click and select remove attributes.
Remove the basic motion (and anything else not required) Your source clips should then all happily match your sequence.best wishes

You need to convert the H264 files to ProRes.
I would suggest either LT or 422 for T3i footage. This is usually done via the log and transfer tool however you need to install the Canon plug in first. You can also use other apps like !Peg Streamclip for this. There is lots of info here about DSLR to FCP.
Golden rule though, don’t edit H264 always convert to ProRes first.best wishes

Final Cut favours ProRes Quicktime files. As you mention you will need an IO card/box in order to achieve this.
What type of Mac do you have ? This will determine which I/O option is best.best wishes

June 28, 2012 at 9:05 pm in reply to: Sequence Settings for 720×576 DV-PAL won’t display 16:9If the footage you have is 16:9 anamorphic it will playback as 720×576 but everything will be distorted to look tall and thin. This is normal. If it looked correct then your footage is 4:3.
You need to do an easy set up project that is DV Anamorphic.
Then set the anamorphic flag on your rushes. It should then appear in your anamorphic timeline correctly.
The fact it is letter boxing suggests that your sequence settings are 4:3.
The “interlacing” you are mentioning is likely to be a field order issue. Make sure your sequence settings are DV Anamorphic and all should be fine.
