Hi Shirley
There are quite a few people here running FCP 7.03 on Mountain Lion without issue. I have not heard of there being a big problem opening FCP7 projects. Indeed a very quick forum search didn’t really throw up any specific project opening problems. I am sure someone will pitch in if I have missed this one.
There are even a few people who seem to have got FCP6 running but not sure how reliable that is !best wishes

Panning is a term which when applied to audio means whether a signal will appear on the left, the right or the middle. The equivalent is the balance control on a hi-fi amplifier.
So where you have just one source channel you need to make sure it is panned to the centre, balanced in the middle if you will. That ensures it will come out of both left and right speakers.
On the audio mixer the pan is at the top of the fader see picture. And you will see it is in the centre which is represented by a value of “0”Hope that helps

With just one track it is not possible to create true stereo as there can be no channel separation.
However you could cheat and just make sure your one track is panned to the centre which will then play out of both speakers but will be dual mono.
If your audio is just voices, talking heads etc etc as long as the track you have used for your source contains the correct mic, for example boom or lav and not camera mic then this will not be much of an issue. Indeed you would have only used one source channel anyway.
However if it turns out you have used the wrong mic by default or there is stereo music involved and you have only taken one channel then you may have more of an issue.best wishes

For stills in FCP 7 you must not exceed 4000 pixels in any direction 72DPI – I tend to do mine 3750 just to make super sure and it still gives you plenty of room to zoom and pan in an HD timeline. If you exceed 4000 pixels you are very likely to get the “out of memory” error popping up.
Plus it gives you plenty of space to zoom in to account for still images that are portrait rather than landscape.
(Its unlikely to get perfect 16:9 aspect stills that all fit beautifully in a tv screen by default.)
So I would scan to files and import that is certainly tons more flexible than shooting them.
In terms of image format you can use .tiff .png or .jpg Some people prefer tiffs but I have just made a short programme with loads of JPEGs without any issue at all.best wishes

You should not need any of the old disks at all. All you need is the relevant serial number. So you install from your FCP7 upgrade disks. It will ask your for the serial number. Once you enter that it should say something along the lines of “that is an upgrade serial number please enter the serial number of the full product you are upgrading from”
So somewhere down the line you should have a serial number for a full version. I have a feeling that FCP V3 is the earliest version you can use as an upgrade to FCP7 .
Anyway old disks not needed just a serial number, you enter that and install away.Hope that might help you – can you find your old full version serial number ?

A really simple and free option is to download some of the film burn files here that have been provided by Digital Cinema Foundry and just overlay onto your original footage and adjust opacity etc or composite mode until you are happy with the look.
Granted not as convenient or as flexible as plug-ins but pretty much duplicates your example.

Oh OK so both Motion and AE can help you out here. I had a quick play with a few shots from a 5DMKII yesterday. I didn’t have any shots that were moving really quickly so perhaps the shots were fairly sympathetic to being slowed down. The time warp function in AE did a slightly better job but takes way longer to render than Motion. Both offer more blending options than FCP so its worth experimenting a little. In my quick and dirty test neither were really “buttery smooth” but a big improvement over FCP alone. So it would be worth having a go at those for sure. Also to be fair I was only looking at my laptop monitor so again not ideal viewing conditions.
If most of your stuff ends up on the web then a full broadcast monitoring set-up is probably a bit over-kill. If your Mac supports Thunderbolt then a really good budget solution is to use a Blackmagic Ultra Studio Monitor Mini ($145) and hook it up via HDMI to a decent TV. It has drivers for FCP, AE, Avid etc so is a really cheap way of getting proper video monitoring. (it has both SDI and HDMI out both with embedded audio)
So maybe that makes it more likely to reach your “all I want for 2013” list.best wishes
