[Andrew Kimery] “Of course there are others, but it just made me chuckle that Neil could remember that Focus Features distributed a couple of those films, but couldn’t recall that “Focus” was the name of one of the features from Focus Features. ????
“
Its funny because I thought that was the name but then couldnt bring myself to believe I was correct because A movie called Focus, made by a company named Focus Films sounded like something Id come up with while I was stoned ☺

February 7, 2019 at 3:44 pm in reply to: All the little things that I miss in Fcpx – that become a big dealA practical use for syncing clips in the timeline is when AE’s have to make crazy sync maps. All the systems currently can take a sync map and with one button press turn that into a multiclip/group now. Can you do this in FCPX? Honestly dont know.

I agree with the trimming and have been vocal about it here in the past as well. – def my biggest pet peeve in X. If you come from literally any other system its not even funny how limited you are.

January 30, 2019 at 2:55 am in reply to: Ain’t your grandpas TV Production studio any more, I suppose.[Oliver Peters] “I know Avid Nexis is pretty solid, but honestly, how many Avid shops are pushing 4K ProResHQ (and higher) through a collaborative workflow? Usually it’s more offline-online and in many cases that “online” with full-res media is pushed off to low RAIDs. So the landscape has changed a little.
– Oliver”
I bet none of them are pushing 4k through those pipes. Ive never worked at one place that use media natively especially 4k and Im really not sure why anyone would want to edit natively in 4k vs a Proxy/ Offline workflow. If time is an issue – you build that in upfront, and I thi kwhatever time is “wasted” making useable files – you gain back in the edit because the files are buttery.

Its def come a long long way but since I cant earn money using it – I gave up on keeping up with it last summer.
Im really surprised it hasn’t gained any traction in marketing and shortform. I think thats a space where it could really shine but I dont see people giving up on Avid and PP anytime soon.

2019 for me :
Will probably still be working on Premiere for the most part for better or for worse. Place I work at is still on 2017 so not really concerned with development cause I dont get to play with it.
MC is the only other NLE Im vested in because I pay to keep a current perpetual license current every year at home even though I havent cut anything from home in years but I do tinker with the updates because chances are Ill be using Avid again. I was really happy with the development this last year, latest builds have been stable and smooth – new update looks great with background saving and titler and multicam improvements and makes it so they now have most of the big multi year feature requests out of the way and actually try some new stuff maybe. probably not.
FCPX didnt really do anything to improve actual timeline editing this year so I havent really paid attention. Until the trim tools get a little more sophisticated Im not sure why Id use it over anything else as whatever speed gains i get with the magnetic timeline I lose because trimming is rather cumbersome. I predict there should be a pretty big update this year though. Only have the original 300 invested in this app from 7 years ago and chances are i get sat in a bay with FCPX are slim to none so not really too concerned with how things shake out here.
Davinci is fun to poke at and pretend I know how to color correct but again – not going to probably ever required to use it for at at least the next 5 years if ever.

[Steve Connor] “[Neil Goodman] “Agency would decline the work because its a pain in the ass, and for the most part – ”
Ha! yes “Sorry Apple we don’t want your work because you’re making us use a different NLE” that would DEFINITELY happen ☺
“Take a moment to think that Apple has work spread out all over town. They ask you to change your workflow or a small part of it – that ripples through the whole company. New talent maybe – new support, new producers to handle the client. All for work that isn’t guaranteed to come back and work you cant show off or use to get other work. Doesnt seem like the smart play.
At the shop Im at now we do accomodate two clients that use Avid – cut their projects in Avid and deliver Avid projects for finishing on their end. It’s a huge pain in the ass for our support, AE, and finishing teams team to accomadate that but we do it because those are 10 year long relationships. Worth the squeeze so to speak and we are allowed to showcase their work on our company reels.
Some of these A/V agencies are small companies with like 10-30 people. Taking on and then losing a client like apple could be disastrous for them.

[Tony West] “Keep in mind Neil, while this isn’t LA, it is the home for the headquarters of some of the largest companies in America. Not to mention the birthplace of Fleishman Hillard who practically invented advertising and public relations. We aren’t exactly sitting around here
milking cows ; ) As the ad before some of yaaaw’s time used to say, “Don’t let the smooth taste fool you”
“I think I know what your implying and your super off base. Clearly we aren’t on the same page but thats cool ☺
