[Tony West] “Anybody that has worked in this biz for more than 20 years knows the trend has been to go smaller and smaller. That means fewer and fewer people. As in, one person do EVERYTHING so we don’t have to pay any workers.

I think this all depends on the type of work you do.

Yes budgets have gotten smaller, editorial teams have shrunk – but Ive never been asked to do anything other than edit picture, and do basic sound design and audio mix.

dedicated GFX and Audio and finishing teams are still very much a thing out here, and I don’t see that changing out here anytime soon for broadcast work.

If I do ever get approached to do my own final GFX and Audio, then the rate goes up.. way up!

[Robin S. Kurz] “I also know that the Avids have been the only edit suites that have ever been down for any extended period of time over the years.”

    This is a ridiculous statement.

Avid is still very much alive and kicking in my neck of the woods.

More work than ever. Rates are great. Lots of people churning out amazing content on the regular.

Im amazed at how many people are rooting for their demise.

[Tony West] “Are there a lot of job postings for people to edit with R11 outside LA?”

    For editorial, no.

I said for colorists R11 is deeply integrated into the LA post scene. R12 will be no different.

Will people start using it exclusively for editorial – probably not at big shops/networks for the same reason why X isnt, because its not a tried and tested bullitt proof system – YET. One man bands – probably.

[Tony West] “Remember how the rub on X was that nobody was using it in the industry?

There were no job postings for it so what was the point?

Well, nobody in my town is using R12. Heck, not only is nobody using it, but nobody is even talking about it.

The difference being R11 is very much so deeply integrated in the post production workflow in LA at least…for coloring. Its main focus. Still alot TBD for its editing capabilities.

Focus came and went – I still dont ever see Job Postings for X in LA. What happened to the storm that was coming that Bill Davis was talking about? The I need a FCPX Editor Facebook group is crickets for the most part.

Oh actually saw one this week. Was 200 a day for broadcast level work. hmmm a little underpaid no?

Not dissing X at all, i like it for somethings I do but at least here in LA – we aint using it yet.

  • thats the one , thanks guys.

  • the day rate seems a little low, while the equipment seems a little high.

  • [Eric Santiago] “I will now be using your statement 🙂

Actually meant to say “My diva ass needs a room!

    but thanks for the homage.,

  • [Andrew Kimery] “Open, bullpen style setups are great for some things, but editing is not one of them, IMO. Metronome has both a bullpen and many editing suites so everyone gets the work area that suits them best.

My major complaint against bullpens is that they require headphones (which damage your hearing long term) and the louder the bullpen the louder you have to make the headphones which speeds up the hearing damage (not to mention the acoustical differences between mixing audio win headphones vs audio monitors). Bullpens also do not allow users to control the lighting and when you spend all day staring at a computer monitor part of good eye health is being able to control the lighting. Finally, bullpens also make it very difficult to collaborate on an edit because all parties either need to be wearing headphones or your have to blast the speakers which obviously is full of problems in an open, communal work space.

I’ve spent a number of years sharing the same space with other editors and obviously do not think very highly of it. 😉

This…Creative editorial has no place in a bull pen, open office type layout. My diva ass needs room!

  • [Ronny Courtens] “So, with all due respect, your comparison with a “sweat shop” doesn’t make any sense.”

Just a joking observation from the pics. Editors in headphones, no rooms, etc. = looks like a sweat shop. No offense meant.
