Bill, that’s the model a lot of us stake our career on and it works out quite well for the most part.

I think you forget hundreds of thousands of editors don’t get to choose what they cut on.

For me, my most lucrative years of editing have been in T.V., and if that means someone else gets to pick what I cut on, and outfit my room the way they see fit, then so be it. Have at it. My career stays intact, I get to work on fulfilling and creative projects, and I’m able to carve out a nice life for myself with this model. You went another route and that’s great for you.

So far I’ve never been disappointed with the hardware/software I’m given to work on.

  • [Michael Aranyshev] “[Oliver Peters] “Such as? The selection of clips within bins or navigating between bins seems about the main thing.”

That alone breaks the flow so much it’s painful. Sorry, I don’t remember the list of missing stuff by heart. What I remember is that every time I have to use MC I feel its designers played a cruel jock on me. Next Cut/Previous Cut without activating trim is not assigned by default. Why?

You can map next edit/previous edit to the up and down keys just like it works in FCP7 w/o having to enter trim mode at all. Takes 1 sec to setup.

I use all the NLE’s pretty much regularly – and I use the mouse less in MC than the other 2. FWIW

June 4, 2015 at 3:43 am in reply to: Long time editor’s frustration with FCPX

[Robin S. Kurz] “Surely by TIMECODE, no? Something you can of course see at all times. Otherwise simply ⇧Z before (or even after) you play, use the scrolling (as described before), hit ⌘+ or ⌘- during playback… there are already many ways to get what you’re looking for, albeit be it “manually”. It’s not FCP 7 where any and everything you do during playback stops playback. Nor is it e.g. Logic Pro that has far less overhead to deal with.

Certainly solutions that I far prefer over potential dropped-frames due to GPU/CPU cycles needed for redrawing (unneeded) timeline elements. It’s certainly far easier for an Avid (or the aforementioned Logic) for example, considering it offers only a fragment of the visual information in the timeline as FCP does.

Wholy crap – are you serious with this? Ae you trying to troll?

every other NLE since pretty much the beginning has had a scrolling timeline, or if not smooth scrolling one that at least keeps up.

FCPX doesnt for whatever reason. James wishes it would because its something that over the years and years of using NLE’s prior to FCPX, you grow accustomed to if its the way you fancy to work. Simple as that.

He likes it, you dont, you sound as if you wish they wont add features to FCPX that you dont think are necessary just because you dont need it. Sure you can use timecode, but why? sure you could zoom out, but why if is not your preference to? Its something simple that can definitely be implemented so why not?

    Why argue against it?

[Andy Neil] “As far as your waveform workaround, it’s just that. A workaround. I don’t want to have to mark INs/OUTs to view waveforms. And I don’t want it to have to redraw the damn things every time I resize my timeline view. FCPX draws waveforms faster, and they react to changes, and it just works better. “

Avid caches the wave-forms now since version 7. I never have to redraw FWIW.

IMO all “certification” is scam. Pay money so someone can tell me I’m certified? For what?

Ive never seen this as job requirement or lost a job to someone who was certified.

looks amazing but version 11 runs like poo on the same machine i edit pretty effortlessly on AVID/PP/FCPX.

if they fix the performance issues, it could be a beast!

When are they gong to do the simple things like savable work spaces – KB shortcut to increase/reduce timeline/lane size, etc.

These little customization will go a long long way with me. More so than 3d titles.

    The masks look nice tho.

[Bill Davis] “But with NBC and Fox scrambling for X editors”

“Scrambling” is a bit of a stretch. There was one post about NBC looking for editors for ONE specific project. Hardly means that there scrambling to do away with all the other NLE’S and Editors. As someone who has worked for both NBC and FOX recently – I can tell you Avid is still alive and well over there and from what i hear not going away anytime soon.

Is that a dig at X – not at all – Just giving you the facts which are sometimes absent from your posts.
