That’s the kind of control I was looking for! So glad you chimed in.

    Thank you.

Thanks Brian, but… Hmm… After trying it out, it’s kinda-sorta what I was looking for, but not quite. I was looking for more of a ruler feature that would be within the HUD and indicate the size of the grid as I zoomed in and out.

But as I test this out again, I’m not seeing that problem anymore where the grid size seemed to change every time I zoomed. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me or maybe I pressed something. Probably staring at the screen for too long…

Now when I zoom in the grid is restraining to the same size. So I measured it at it’s smallest and it comes to be 200 units, no matter if they are inches, feet, miles, etc.

I guess I’m just trying to grasp how things are measured in this interface. What if I wanted to work in a 1 foot measurement? To snap to the grid wouldn’t work because it would be 200 feet away. Is there no way to work in a 1x1x1? I’m used to designing in photoshop for print and video where things need to be a specific size. I’m not seeing that here in CGI land.

It seems that most people design for the eye, rather than by scale. Is that a safe assumption?

Thank you Stavros for instructing us on how to use it for exporting markers. This app is so incredibly helpful when you need to produce a rundown list of all lower 3rds, chapter titles, and animation notes for graphic designers to work from.

    Cha’ching.

Thanks everyone. I’ve learned a lot from your input. I will be testing in a week or whenever funds come through. I’ll let you know if I come across any significant discoveries.

Joey, I own the Sony V1U (HDV 3CMOS) camera. Are you saying I’ll have problems using this? If so, then why?

I have access to the Panasonic HVX 200. Am I better off using that one?

Thanks Jeremy, I have seen that article and it helped a little, but I’m going to be trying to match my live action and camera movement with the background virtual environment and this article doesn’t explore that.

I’ve searched around the web and looks like I can pull it off if I set the camera on a tripod and don’t make any movements (safest bet). I could then place a background image for my environment and adjust it as needed.

However, since I would love to move the camera, if anyone can offer any advice or a workflow for this I would really appreciate it and I’m sure you’d be helping many others on this.

I’m equipped with FCP Studio 2 and AE CS3. Not completely sure if I have the tools for motion matching or if I need to invest in a 3D camera tracking software like Boujou Bullet or SynthEyes or even a 3D character application like Maya.
